Copilot Live 7.. worth it?

Hi,

I'm relatively new to the N95 8gig and sat navs and having just bought a nice brodit phone holder for my car I'm eager to get sat nav up and running on the N95.

I've tried the Nokia Maps navigation which I think is 'ok', but I'm a little concerned about having to go online to get best results for navigation. Through reading a previous topic and then this Symbian Satnav I am interested Copilot Live as an alternative.

Currently my data package with Orange only includes unlimited evenings and weekends data so i get charged for data during the normal working week, hence the desire to get a satnav that runs well offline.

I have heard that there is no need to go online with Copilot Live... can somebody confirm this please and comment on 'offline' performance?

I read that the "bear right/left" instruction gets a little annoying with Copilot, have others found this to?

Has anybody had any problems installing this on a N95 8gig?

Any other comments on this as a Sat nav solution?

The free speed cameras tool sounds decent too.

Cheers

Copilot is quite good. There are a huge amount of features, but you need to go online for most of them.

However, navigation doesnt require any net access, and its good enough to live with. I was a bit critical of the voice instructions, but then I am extremely picky about such things.

The left/right issue is there, but its not as bad as some others.

Installing it on an 8Gb should be ok, but beware of it writing over other programs. I dont think it should, but I havent tried it, I use the card instead.

It'll do the job, and I reckon most people would be pleased with it.

There will soon be a much much better review up, I'll add it to my sig once its up.

Thanks Bartmanekul.

It does sound like a v good option. I don't mind going online to get the features, i can just do that at home through the wifi connection or use the orange internet if I'm out and about - I'm sure that wouldn't use much data anyway.

Out of interest, does anybody have any idea how much data say a 100 mile journey would use if you used a Sat Nav (e.g. Tom Tom) that required online access?

I'm still tempted by the TomTom software too but not if it uses a lot of data to produce it's navigation.

Thanks

Generally speaking, a lot dont use data, although almost all have features which do use it.

Tomtom doesnt use data for navigating, just for traffic etc (same as others).

Tomtom doesnt use the internal GPS without a hack however, which means you have to reset the GPS device in the tomtom menu every time you start it up.

It also uses increased power consumption due to the way the hack works. Add to that, theres no support, since the N95 isnt supported.

You could try nokia maps, its not great featurewise, but you can download maps for your country, rather than downloading them over the air. You do have to use a bit of data when searching for postcodes etc though.

The ones that do not need data to navigate are:

Tomtom

Garmin (not available for 8GB unless you hack it, since its supplied on memory card and locked to it).

Copilot

Navigon (but no sign of any updates for a long time)

Route66 (I dont like the routing, but some say its ok)

Sygic (just not good enough yet imo)

Navicore (old version - supposedly an update soon).

Id go for copilot if I were you, as I said, theres a much better review coming out very soon.

Great feedback, thanks again..

I try Nokia maps offline tonight (driving from brum to Derby) and if it doesn't cut it, then I think it's going to be the Copilot Live software....

How easy/expensive is it to add additional maps to Copilot as I'm off to NZ and Oz for a month at the end of the year and would like to use the phone for navigation as much as I can...

Finally (for now ;-) ), can you receive/make calls whilst the sat nav is running?

Thanks!

Not sure about the map adding, I didnt need to try it since I have the euro version. It also depends on what maps you need.

I assume you can make calls, I was always going to other programs while copilot was active. I would check, but have just got a new phone and its not setup yet.

Definatly something I need to add in my reviews!

We did mention this recently but what is the best way to get the Copilot Live data off the mini SD card and onto the N95 8gig?

Im currently trying to do this, but I need to trawl through my work email to find the method, since it wasnt in the intial manual I got given by copilot.

I'll post here as soon as I find it. But for the moment, Im blooming knackered and off to bed.

Oh, and if you give me a list of the countries you intend to visit, I'll see if theres prices for them on Copilot Central.

Cool! Well I had a search and found this from a previous exchange we had! :

I presume I would need to buy a card reader that reads micro SD cards then in order to get their bundled maps onto the N95 8gig - something like this should do it. Kingston 1GB Micro Secure Digital Card With Micro SD Card Reader - Black - Ebuyer

A lot read only normal, and not HC variants. the one you gave a link to obviously does - Supported Flash Memory MicroSD, microSDHC
Taken from http://www.n95users.com/forum/newrep...reply&p=127297

i presume it goes something like this...

1) Put the Copilot Mini SD care into a suitable card reader (such as the one in the link) and attach to PC via USB

2) Copy data to PC

3) Copy data to N95 8gig (which folder) or use Copilot software to to this???

If you could clarify the above when you get chance, that would be great!

I would assume so, but Im not entirely sure. I did get instructions from Copilot on how to do this, as I asked them.

Unfortunatly, my password as has expired at work and I cant login to webmail (arrgghh), and I really cant be bothered to drive there.

Except I found this here: Answer

Good job I asked them to put it on the website eh?

It is as easy as copying across, but you can leave some folders so save space.

While transferring, I just saw a file/folder go across called 'Kiss Zoltan'. Wtf? Flash Gordon is in Copilot?
