if the phone is brand new , send it back while it's under 30 days and get a new one !
Nokia Care Centres cannot claim a warranty repair on a handset in that period so will probably tell you to send it back anyway !

I suspect it'll be on its way back to Play
Received my 8gb card and that works fine.
Plugged it into the N95 and iMac and had no problem
on either.
Aside from the card, I did manage to transfer about 160mb
of music from the computer to the phone via Bluetooth
and unusually the phone didn't crash........

Just a quick question. Do you have either MSN Messenger, and, or OperaMini installed.?
I ask this because, my N95-2 was taking 10 seconds to open contacts, and after I removed these two items, its like a new phone, back up to speed.
Now with my N95-1, i also had issues with it freezing, but this was down to a theme called Ferrari Black, with default icons, it works fine on my N95-2, but causes the camera to freeze on the N95-1.

Nokia people can be real *******s so you should be one too. I bought my N95 from a T-Mobile distributor but not once did I mention it's name to the workers at the Nokia store and not once did I show them a receipt. I was just a complete *** and they did everything they could for me and eventually gave me a new phone (I never once showed them a receipt or nothing for all they know it could have been off the black market or something).
If you can get in touch with a Nokia flagship store all the better. If worst comes to worst and they keep repairing your phone to no avail (like they initially did to me), you can start really playing mind games. I actually called the repair center and put them on the phone with my buddy and told them he was my representative (I never lied because he was representing me...but they automatically assumed lawyer). Suddenly things changed and all I had to do was go into the flagship store and replace my defective phone.

Update.......
Spoke to Nokia on the phone yesterday and told them of
the problems and the advice given was to give it a firmware
"update" (the firmware was the newest but I should have a
go installing the firmware again) so I managed to coax
a friend into using her PC (I have a Mac) to attempt the update.
About three quarters of the way through, the PC said that
it had lost contact with the phone. I clicked "Retry"
on the screen and nothing happened. "Retry" again,
nothing happened.
I now have an N95 with a permanent "NOKIA"
legend on it, apart from when I remove the battery.
The chap at Nokia indicated that if the firmware replacement
didn't work, they might ask me for the phone back
so their tech people can have a look.
To me it seems like a hardware problem.
I am about to phone Nokia to update them as well......

Wasn't really paying a huge amount of attention but the last
number I can remember seeing was "9" - 9 minutes remaining.
Either way, when I hit the "Retry" button the PC couldn't connect
and the phone had nothing but the "Nokia" legend against a
white backdrop (just before the Nokia handshake)
FWIW, when I switch the phone on now I don't get the little
vibration that occurs when I normally switch on the unit.

I haven't installed any application so it would be factory settings.

Normally what has been known when NSU freezes during its process, is exit NSU in your processes list on your pc, leaving your phone connected, then launch NSU again, and it usually picks up from where it left off.
What version of NSU were you using on your friends PC? Also, what OS does it have? I ask this as only the very latest version of NSU supports Vista.

I (She, specifically) downloaded the NSU last night
so whereas I cannot give you the version number,
I assume it is the most up to date version for Win
XP (don't know service pack).
I did direct her to the software as I was looking over her
shoulder so I know it was the right software but I didn't
make a note of the version number.
