No idea what's wrong with it!!!

OK, I'm in the middle of a slight dilemma at the moment, VERY frustrating and any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Basically, about 10 days ago I got a Nokia N95 on a brand new contract with Orange, at the Carphone Warehouse.

All seemed to work fine, 'till sometimes I would make a call and instead of connecting my call and then ringing, it would just let off an extremely loud high pitched squealing noise down the phone, constantly, until I ended the call. It wouldn't actually connect to the person I was calling, just make this noise 'till I hung up. Sometimes however, it would connect fine and ring...

Figured the handset is probably knackered, so I took it back to CPW within the 14 days return policy.

I got the replacement, came out, tested it and straight away it did it AGAIN!

Back in I went...and tried yet ANOTHER N95...once again, it did it after a few goes.

I then put my SIM into the new Nokia Classic phone, totally different from the N95 and lo and behold, we got it to do it on that one too.

Thinking it MUST be a faulty SIM, the saleswomen did a "sim swap" and swapped my sim card for another one, rung orange to link it up to my old number and then at 8pm I could turn the phone on to accept the new settings etc. All that worked fine, then I made a call and guess what...IT'S STILL DOING IT...on 4 different N95's, on totally different phone entirely and on TWO different SIM cards.

The fault is intermittent...sometimes it'll do it every time I try and call someone 4 times in a row, sometime only once in 10 calls.

Anyway, I called Orange this morning and suggested a network fault, but they seem to think that they'd have a lot of calls about it if it was the case, and they even thought I might have had 5 faulty phones one even being a different model!? Hmmm.

I really don't want to have to keep swapping the phone, as next time it won't be a new one and I've finally got one with a decent screen/speaker/slider.

It can't be the phone surely? Another faulty SIM? or a Network problem?

Any help or ideas would be awesome.

Thanks.

I'm guessing network problem but seems to be linked to your number... Have you another SIM that you can try in it? PAYG SIM, or if not locked to Orange, another telco's SIM perhaps?

I've had this too,not with my N95 but with my N73 or N80,i can't remember now, anyway yeah i had this too,not as much as you though.
I didn't get the handset replaced as it did it every so often but i still couldn't quite put my finger on it,it could be a network problem though but then again it could be a hardware problem, either way i think you've been a bit unlucky.

I'm gonna try an O2 contract SIM and Orange PAYG sim later.

As I am on contract, is it possible for them to link another new SIM to my phone but changing the number rather than keeping my current one or can they not do that?

If you don't get the problem when using a PAYG or O2 SIM and yet your original number, on two different SIMs has displayed the same fault on several handsets... Then it HAS to be an Orange network problem, associated with your NUMBER (NOT your SIM).

A telco can attach whatever number it likes to your contract, you are within your rights to ask for a new number to be issued to you if they can't or won't investigate their network fault.

Be sure to give them the fullest possible details of the fault, especially the events in carphone warehouse, with times and dates for them to check if they require it.

Tip: Don't demand anything, ask for their help instead and if the cust serv op can't help, ask to speak to a supervisor... If you get nowhere, be polite, end the call and try again later until you get satisfaction.

EDIT: Maybe CPW could issue you with a new number instead of going through Orange? If all else fails, return the phone and cancel the contract... Then take out a new contract with a new number... Even better, take out a T-Mobile contract instead! ;)

It's too late for me to cancel the contract now so I have to stick with it.

I don't understand what could be happening, nobody seems to have ever heard of this problem. Hopefully the other SIM's I try will work, but what's the problem with the last two I had? It's very odd.

It IS possible for a specific number, though more usually a group of numbers, to cause problems... Though I'm afraid that I can't remember the technical details of how this happens... Orange technical dept will be aware that it can happen though!

The simplest solution may be to get CPW to issue you a new number if that's possible.

Can Orange do this instead of having to go through to CPW?

Yes but dealing with CPW may be simpler and quicker... Orange will cancel the old SIM and post you a new one, you will be unable to use your phone for a few days.

As you say CPW were able to swap your number to a new SIM whilst you were in the shop, they'll probably be able to issue you with a new number while you wait.

In addition to which, proving the fault to CPW will be far easier than proving it to Orange. A further consideration is that if CPW can't give you a new number, then they may exchange the handset, complete with a new number, instead. (By cancelling the contract and giving you a new one)

That's one thing I really want to avoid as it's taken 4 handsets to get a "good one" with no wobbles, buzzing noises, crackly speakers or dead pixels! I really want to keep this one.
