A truly amazing video I saw this morning

I got up this morning and started reading HoFo and came across a post with a link to a video that was just amazing.

go to MIR Show - Week 44 - All About Symbian, Smaato and Scalado | Mobile Industry Review and scroll down a little to the video.

The amazing part is at 7 minutes into the video when they interview a man from scalado.com and he shows some really amazing photo software running on an N95 8GB.

I do not know why this is not currently available but hopefully it will be available soon.

seriously, you guys MUST go watch this video. PLEASE.

That is certainly impressive considering there's no hardware acceleration going on there, just software based.!

It makes you wonder, in order to view the images at 5MP that quick, it's down to the hardware to provide the data to the program. ... I don't get it.

Sexyback was talking about an app not long ago that was like coverflow on the ipod, apparently one of her friends was trying to get it up and running.

Looks like he got beaten to it.

Found this about the company, and the actual software used.

Scalado CAPS SDK enables you to provide stunning imaging applications at a fraction of normal development costs and with minimal use of valuable memory. Using Scalado CAPS™ SDK, device manufacturers can quickly develop exciting imaging applications that are extremely CPU and memory efficient.

Enhancing imaging experiences on Multi-megapixel phones
Scalado CAPS SDK is probably the most effective and powerful imaging tool for mobile camera phones on the market today. CAPS solves the problems of image processing in multi-megapixel camera phones. Mobile phone manufacturers gain an imaging advantage for their products through greater end-user appeal and reduced development costs. With the CAPS SDK, instant viewing and special effects are just a click away. Users get instant feedback, making photo applications easy and user friendly.

More speed, less memory
CAPS has an impressive array of advantages. It includes a highly efficient JPEG Codec (Scalado RAJPEG™) that is up to 10 times faster than standard libraries. The image processing engine in CAPS decreases demands on RAM (heap) memory by a factor of 25x, freeing up valuable memory capacity to perform other functions. Mobile phone manufacturers gain an imaging advantage for their products through greater end-user appeal, reduced product costs and faster time to market.

CAPS SDK includes a full set of tools, software libraries, reference applications such as album and editing, sample code and documentation. Using CAPS SDK, software engineers can develop sophisticated imaging applications for constrained mobile devices at a fraction of the time and cost, enhancing products and creating a real imaging advantage.

News

Apparently, Samsung has already recently signed a deal with them, let hope Nokia follow, or at least have a finger in the pie.

That is pretty cool, especially the nice smooth (with no delay) zooming and the smooth scrolling. The smooth scrolling makes it easier to follow a single point, for context. When there's a big jump, it's harder to see exactly where you are.

The photoshop-style tweaking was fast and neat too.

The panorama feature looked cool too (I haven't used Panoramio, so can't compare).

The realtime capture (which needed hardware support) - I think that the Cybershot phones do that, don't they? When you press the shutter button, it gives you a few pictures from before the shutter press and after the shutter press.

I've seen similar "coverflow" type applications on Windows Mobile that weren't hardware accelerated, so that wasn't so impressive for me. Still nice though.

Update..

Scalado (Scalado - The mobile imaging experts), a world-leader in mobile imaging software solutions, will present its new technology innovation, The Scalado Camera Solution. This latest development from Scalado is the first to include both the Scalado Camera Engine™ and Scalado SpeedTags™ and will be demonstrated at the Image Sensor Summit in California, USA, where Sami Niemi, CTO of Scalado will also be speaking on November 17th, at 5.15.

The Company's innovative solution for improving JPEG image handling performance by effectively managing the large files produced by high-resolution images, enables zero-shutter lag, burst capturing and instant zoom/pan in the camera. A live demo board, developed in collaboration with Texas Instruments (TI), Symbian and OmniVision will be on display during the show, and a demo board movie can be seen here: Camera Solution

"Thanks to the new technology, manufacturers can now offer real-time viewing and capturing of high-resolution images, totally eliminating shutter lag. As a result, camera phone users can finally take memorable photos instead of missing the moment.”, says Sami Niemi CTO of Scalado.

With this new solution, photographers using a camera phone can instantly capture multi-megapixel images without any "shutter lag", thereby freezing the exact moment of capture. Until now, only advanced Digital Still Cameras (DSC) and Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras have thus far been capable of managing the delay between pressing the capturing button and actually saving the view finder image as the captured high resolution image.

As a result, 'shutter lag' has typically been one of the biggest technical challenges facing camera phones, especially when photographing moving objects. With Scalado's new 'zero shutter lag' feature, however, users can be sure that the image which they see in the viewfinder is the image that they capture. Users can then instantly zoom into the resulting JPEG images to review the details of the image in real-time.

By providing instant random access to the captured JPEG, the Scalado Camera Solution allows unprecedented JPEG handling performance, as well as faster image browsing in the photo gallery. The result is a mobile imaging solution that can provide up to 20 frames/second instant full-resolution image handling, instant zoom/pan at the moment the image is captured, and burst-mode image capture. As with shutter lag, fast burst-mode image capture – the rapid capture of multiple images - has until now been associated only with expensive, high-end cameras or expensive additional hardware processing.

"The combination of true creativity, enormous processing power, and jaw-dropping features in our latest software reinforces Scalado's status as experts and innovators who are focused on continuously enhancing the imaging experience." , says Fadi Abbas, VP Business development at Scalado.

The Scalado Camera Solution is based on two products: The SpeedTags IP and The Scalado Camera Engine. The SpeedTags IP is a minimal modification to the HW JPEG encoder that enables the encoder to produce modified JPEG images, referred to as SpeedTagged JPEGs.

Several camera sensors and camera modules for camera phones are already embedding the SpeedTags IP, such as sensors from both Aptina, OmniVision Samsung and MtekVision.

Thanks to Teo of Symbian-Freak for the heads up.!
