I don't believe you can. Why would you want to do this?

Virtualdub can rotate a video but then it will have 3:4 proportions instead of 4:3 so it doesn't fit a standard TV screen for instance.

im not bothered about connecting the phone to a tv. Reason for asking is because im used to holding a phone vertically and recording a video. I guess i'll just have to get used to holding it horizontally when recording a video so that when i do transfer it over to my pc i wont have to tilt my head to the side.

Oh come on guys. Let's not start insulting each other.
Just get used to holding the N95 properly. I don't understand why it's a difficult concept for you, but it's the way it's done. I honestly don't know why you would hold the thing vertically... all the icons are on their side then. It should be natural for you to hold it properly.
What a very odd thread.

how is it a " very odd " thread?. when talking on the phone it is held vertically, 99% of camera phones the video is done vertically, hence the question about if the video can be done in portrait (vertical) mode.

So you're referring to the way you hold it?
Re-read your original question. It seems you're asking if you can record video in 3:4 mode, not the standard 4:3 mode. So when you watch the video- it would be tall, there would be black bars on either side.
If that's what you're asking for- it's an odd request, and it makes this an odd thread.
Are you asking if you can hold the N95 in a way other than it was ment to be held when recording video and get a 4:3 video? Why not just use it correctly? Is it that much of a hurdle, or do you really want the tall video?
To reiterate Leong's thoughts- weird.

I can see both sides of this.
Most cellphones record video with the phone in an upright position. The exception are phones which want to be taken seriously as a camera.
You have to think of the N95 as more of a compact digicam.
Having said that, after finding the stills camera autorotates portrait pictures I tried it with a video just to see if the camera was really clever.
