Usually mac filtering is enough for the home user who has nothing to hide (legitimate or illegitimate). It helps by simply not allowing your neighbors to connect to your network.
Ofcourse it is really very easy to spoof a mac address. But from my past experience (things may have changed) it takes a wifi card with monitor mode to actually sniff out the mac address (plain text). And if someone has gone to lengths to acquire such a card (myself), they will generally have no issue with breaking either WEP or WPA, if they are patient and persevere. As I recall it took me over two weeks to collect enough packets to break WEP. Ofcourse my network doesnt have a huge amount of traffic, but the point is if they want to, they can break in.
And if you simply just want to make it hard for people to accidentally log on to your network, hiding you ssid and mac filtering is good enough.
