Its not free and there is another thread somewhere goin on just now about this. They may even charge up to your full contracts value!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In their eyes, its as good as you leaving them.
Try to use a turbo sim, which will unlock it. Some users here have used it. (Guys you might want to add....)

Unlock phone
Thanks for your reply ,What is a turbo sim? Am I missing something? What does it matter if a phone is unlocked I still have a contract for 18 months with them?

Absolutley, you are in a legal binding contract and if you dont pay they will send folk to your door, and in worst cases, take you to court. This will also affect your credit rating. So you are basically stuck with your monthly payment.
One of the guys will let you know where to get a turbo sim, which unlocks your phone too all networks, so keep checking this thread, and if you want, you could use a different sim. But no matter what, even if you lost the phone, you are still legally binding and have to pay your monthly charge until your contract ends.

Unlock 3 contract phone
Hi there thanks to all for replys. I have just rang 3 who inform me that it would cost me the whole of my 18 month contract £423 +£15.00 if I wanted to unlock it with them. The way it works is that you pay approx £450.00 to them & then it is put on your account & as you use your phone on 3 they deduct the costs of your calls & monthly contract off the figure you gave them originally. Does anyone know if my guarantee would be invalidated if I got it unlocked myself?

Sure it will invalidate your warranty.
If you update from the Nokia web site it invalidate's your 3 warranty. In fact if anyone does anything to the phone other than 3 or a Nokia service Centre it invalidates the warranty.
The 3 warranty is pretty useless unless you happen to break your phone withn 14 days of getting it as all they'll do is repair anyway and you get the exact same cover but for longer from Nokia as I understand it. I guess what 3 are really doing is exactly that as well, relying on the Nokia warranty for the repair.
I guess you do have some options though!
1) Ask a Nokia Service centre what they would charge.
2) Speak to 3 again and tell them you travel alot and need to use foreign sims in the phone - this worked for me with an old NEC many years ago and I believe it has worked for others.
3) Do it anyway, if the phones bricked I'm not sure how much they can really tell anyway.
4) You can always get a new sim for nothing
But unless 2) was true then why would you want to unlock it if you still have many months left on your contract - do it at the end when presumably it'll cost just the £ 15.

Wow thats harsh.. i know T-Mobile do it from day one for £30.00 and you dont have to settle your contract beforehand either. Well if you unlocked and debranded it would void your warranty but how would Nokia know ;) you can always rebrand it.. but if your handset gets replaced under warranty then you would ofcourse have to then get that one unlocked again
