If the choice were just
N95 and iPhone then fair enough. But it's not. A N800 or N810 would do a better job if Wi-Fi only. Not only that but you are restricted to only Wi-Fi for a reasonable connection with iPhone, when away from a hot-spot the iPhone video is severely compromised by lack of 3G.
So, the BBC has chosen a platform that is deployed in far fewer numbers on a single phone model, locked into a network (for the UK, the BBC home nation) that has a poor EDGE infrastructure and no access to 3G let alone 3.5G and prohibitively expensive to own. Hardly the optimal choice.
I would suggest that their choice of iPhone is because they don't yet have the infrastructure to support the bandwidth requirement if they had gone for a more popular platform. With a niche product like iPhone there is less risk of the service being unable to cope with demand.
