Encoding Music - Which Codec - What settings?? (N95-2)

Hi guys,

Some consise technichal advise if you please...

All revolving around music on my N95-2...

On with the questions:

1> I have discovered that lossless wma files and apple lossless files are not supported, what is the best codecd to use for my music if I'm trying to acheive as close to perfect (ie lossless) compression for playback on my N95-2?

2>What compressions/codecs does the n95-2 actually support (file extensions and compression codecs please)?

3>I have created .aac files but my phone won't play them, it recognises them but says unable to play, whats wrong here?

4>I have also tried to create aac+ files (file extention m4a) but the phone doesn't even recognise these files as music files! Any advise??

An advise is well received, thanks!

Blatant

Thanks guys,

but what does i-tunes actually spit out?? aac+ I assume but what settings? I won't/can't use i-tunes, but can easily re-create a music file just like i-tunes would, I need some details on the aac+ settings though...

why can't you use itunes? you don't need to have an ipod to run it? i don't get the point in "recreating files" the same as a program would, when you can download it for nothing?

This might be interesting;

Quick intro to transcoding your media files to HE-AAC v2 - MoDaCo

(Winamp method works on N95 a treat!)

I think this is a good question - you should use an audio format for which the N95 has hardware decode support. This will reduce the processing and battery required to play the music.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer. I would guess that MP3 is the most likely to be supported in hardware since it is the most commonly. If so, you could use the "alt preset standard" setting of LAME since this is supposed to be indistinguishable from lossless. This is a VBR profile that usually ends up being under 192Kbps (ie. much smaller then lossless).

@qwave - the N95 can decode HE-AAC v2 without any problem. The very small file size/high quality audio reproduction = a lot more bang for your microSDHC.

Well for me its more a case of privacy and computer resources, but wether or not to use iTunes is a personal preference decision. I don't want to get hung up on a choice of software argument, the fact is I can produce an audio file coded to ant standard I chose using my own software that sits quite happily in the background and doesn't interfere with my workload....

Anyway onwards :)

THanks all for your comments everyone, kudos for the link there Sturgeon, I'll let you guys know how I get on, I'm off to code up an he-aac.

Please keep commenting and add your 2 penneth
