Another option is to remove all Nokia related software from your PC, including the modems, and cable drivers, and start over.

Again, there is mention of all these already in the forums, which a search should show.

I've been browsing around here now for a while, with different search strings. It's a LOT ;-)

I'll try that, thanks.

I had that problem when I re-installed the previous firmware - 2.0 or whatever. Don't worry it goes away, eventually and sorts itself out.

Blinkin'Flip!............29 pages read, digested and headache inducing, on updating to v21 and I'm still none the wiser. Should I upgrade, shouldn't I. Sometimes even halfway through a page I'd changed my mind yet again!

Why do Nokia/SE and the like make updating these phones about as easy as nailing a jelly to the wall?

A little background............Recently picked up an N95-1 on ebay for a snip, I think the person selling it was scared to death and couldn't wait to get rid!. Hadn't been used much and hadn't been updated from v10.0.018 (product code:0548364). Running perfectly fine with original version firmware installed but I really, really want to update to make the most of this fine phone.

A few questions to see if I've got my head around all the possible pitfalls.....

Was just about to insert Nokia PC Suite CD into my drive before I read the 29 pages. I understand there's a newer version of that available as well? Should I download that from the Nokia site (if the facility is there to do that), or will installing from the CD be okay?

Are all compatibility issues with Vista sorted now?

I've checked for the availablility of upgrading using the Nokia service, inputting version No. and product code. It informs me that v21.0.106 is the latest version to go for. So I don't need to change the product code then?

Keep sim card in and take memory card out????

I think that's it for now? My problem is, I'm using a company t-mobile sim with no contract, I just pay for calls, MMS etc. and I don't want to brick the phone as I would have little or no chance of recompense if the worst should happen. Had no end of trouble upgrading firmware in my w800i when I tried it a couple of years ago so maybe you'll understand my reticence.

Any further advice gratefully received and congratulations on such a thorough and informative forum you guys have.

Thanks,

I would suggest you download the latest PC Suite from the Nokia website - Nokia Europe - Nokia PC Suite - Support

I don't think compatibility issues with Vista are cleanly resolved, different workarounds work for different people. One option that works for some is to use the Nseries PC Suite, which you can dowmload from here: Nokia Nseries

Another option is to download just the NSU (Nokia Software Updater) as a standalone program - Nokia Europe - Device software update - Support, then right-click the icon on your desktop and select XP from Properties -> Compatibility and launch it like that.

You do not need to change your product code if you can upgrade to V21 as is. Your product code is for O2 from CPW, but if you're happy with the O2 firmware, which is the least crippled branded version then you don't need to overcomplicate things.

You definitely need the SIM card in and the phone set to General profile. It doesn't matter whether the memory card is in or out, since it is not affected by the firmware update, but you can take it out to be on the safe side.

Good luck and let us know how it goes !

1. If you mean why to wait for branded firmware then it's just politics. If you mean loosing data then it should be different in N96. In N95 and other current N/Eseries we have what we have.
2. From 10? The first thing you should do.
3. PC Suite from CD looks pretty old in your case.
4. No, some issues stil need to be solved.
5. No, you don't have to change product code.
6. You don't have to take sim out. I recommend to remove memory card. It is recommended also to make copy of messages, contacts, etc. You can do that with PC Suite.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the replies people. Will definitely give it a go and let you know how it turns out. Unfortunately I've got to go to work in a bit, (I think I'll give it a few hours for the whole process, maybe 24?? ), so will attempt it tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

One more question...........Yes 93tid, I believe the previous owner was using 02 as her service provider. However, the phone is completely debranded and obviously not locked as I can use my t-mobile sim no problem. Will this cause any conflicts and you're sure I won't need to enter a different product code?

Sorry for the daft questions.................

Thanks again,
norvegicus
