N95 running with 4gb memory card??

Hey guys.

I found a picture of the Nokia N95 running on 4Gb memory card. I'm not sure if this is a genuine photo though.

(Couldn't post the image here because of to few posts, check it out at my homepage dario.soltani.se/2007/04/02/nokia-n95-with-4gb-memory-card/)

Actually, I've seen discussion about this recently. It's coming from a very well known and respected German member at some forum- I can't remember where.

The thing is it could either be a 4GB non HC SD card, or it's possible that the SDHC cards will be readable in the N95, but not reliable. The problem with 4GB SDHC cards in the N95 is that they're not tested out on the device- if could very well be that any sdhc card will be recognized by the N95, but have stability/reliability issues.

Time will tell on this one.

I recommend, before ANYBODY posts following this, you read the article on the symbian operating system from wikipedia:

Quote:
At its lowest level lie the base components of Symbian OS. This includes the kernel (EKA1 or EKA2 - see the 'History' section), as well as the user library which allows user-side applications to request things of the kernel. Symbian OS has a microkernel architecture, which means that the minimum necessary is within the kernel. It contains a scheduler and memory management, but no networking or filesystem support. These things are provided by user-side servers.
(emphasis added) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbian_OS)

1) 4GB cannot be done without SDHC (fat32)
Quote:
, thereby fixing the "definitive" limit for the FAT16 partition size at 2 gibibytes.

2)So, that the N95 would or wouldn't be able to read FAT 32 (SDHC) is a software thing. Wouldn't take nokia too much effort to enable it -- nor would it require much "testing" as its merely a filesystem, if they use a standard implementation (driver) then it should work fine the first time. In fact, nokia doesn't have any work to do here as the wiki article mentions a SymbianOS Fat32 implementation already exists:
Quote:
Symbian OS supports various filesystem types including FAT32 and Symbian OS-specific NOR flash filing systems.
3) I have a running bet that if the n95 doesn't support SDHC out of the box, it will within a very short amount of time. It simply makes no sense whatsoever for it to not work.

Thanks guys very interesting discussion here. I knew about the fat16 limitation, but I must agree with ZGold550. As a computer engineer I don't really see the problem? FAT32 is FAT16 compatible. But maybe Nokia wants the filesystem upgrade as a OS upgrade, like Symbian 10?

I have no idea... Anyone knows how Nokia's acted in similiar situations in the past?

Interesting. Thanks for bringing that to the discussion. I'd love to be able to contact the individual who is allegedly using that 4gb card...

Anyone out there planning on snatching up a 4gb SDHC to see if it works? I expect we'll be hearing more on this as the number of N95 users grow. I also suspect, as you do, that if they don't work yet, it should not be long before they do.

Thanks again for the insight.

psuedo: I'm still not convinced those 4GB MicroSds exist in the wild :)

//edit read your post in accessories. Guess we all still have some waiting to do, whether or not we have the phone :)

i like to believe it to be true. but since the picture is very unclear, it is appropriate to question such thing is possible.

I agree. Especially since we can't seem to find any retailers currently offering 4gb microSDHC cards yet... :?
