Great article, and a worthy one too. I have been researching Nokia
N95 clones for sometime now, and have found around 10 different clones, each with different levels of detail. The later
N95 8GB clones, are almost identical in every way, however, there are some differences, which can be seen from the outside of these handsets without actually having to switch on the device.
I have written a details article, and guide on my blog about these clones, and what to look out for, because many a consumer cannot see the device switched on prior to purchase, particularly if purchasing online.
With Cloned devices getting mixed in with Genuine Nokia handsets, its becoming an even bigger problem, with retailers even falling prey to these counterfeiters, and not knowing what they are selling in some cases, and as said, without actually switching on the device, its almost impossible to tell the difference, however, many clones are easy to spot apart, these being the earlier clones.
For example, the early
N95 8GB clone came with an external MicroSD memory card door, which was a dead giveaway to us in the know, however, several people joined out forums
www.N95users.com/forums after finding their purchase didn't seem right somehow, and only then did we confirm they had purchased a clone under the impression it was a genuine Nokia handset.
As mentioned earlier, the latter
N95 8GB clones, are more identical from the outside, but the differences can be seen on my website..

The counterfeiter has gone even further with this clone, mimicking the actual software layout, however, again, its easy to spot to us in the know, but the poor consumer probably would not know.
The counterfeiter is using an hacked earlier Nokia firmware from an earlier device, the N73 handset, and even shows a result when you enter *#0000# into the handset, which displays the handsets Firmware. Earlier clones showed a firmware which was very obvious to be fake, but the latest clones of the
N95-2 ((GB model) show a genuine
N95 firmware when *#0000# is entered, however, this is the very first firmware that was released for the
N95-1 (NOT 8GB model), which to us in the know can tell right away, however, once again, the consumer has been fooled even further.
With these devices not being cheap, and some costing upto $700USD, its a small fortune to many, and money they cannot afford to lose.
If you wish to contact me for any further information, or photos of these various clone, do get in touch.
