I ALMOST BOUGHT A FAKE one hour ago!
This site is amazing! As are the admin's. I have been browsing this site for the past 2 days as I have been talking to a local guy (found on classified) about buying his Nokia N95-4 NAM. Well, I took a look at it and the OS looked pretty good. No weird font, etc. Casing looked nice. All the positive on first glance. There were just a few tale-tell signs:
On the back, it said Optiss, not Optics
The camera was not flush with the back, it was recessed like the N95-2 is.
It said Autofocus not AF
Therefore, I thought it might have been an N95-2 for a bit; however, the 'm' in megapixel was not capitalized as it should has been for an N95-2. And the 6 was very close the word Autofocus.
The LED near the camera was more square than round.
The aperture of the camera was smaller than I thought it should have been
The battery case cover was not the number it should have been based on a blog I saw. It was K 1-1.
Inside the battery cover, it all changed. The sticker was an N95-2 sticker, not a N95-4. It didn't even say 8gb (there was not a flash drive though). The outside did say N95 8GB in top left corner in small font that looked just the same as genuine pics.
I then checked the firmware it said something similiar: V10.???????, N95 (12.01). Don't remember the ROM.
I then tried to connect it to my laptop with PC Suite and it was not recognized. The only thing the computer recognized on the phone was a mass storage device.
Bluetooth worked, GPS worked, Wifi worked. I made calls, got texts. I play with it for about 20 minutes but didn't take pictures as I thought the seller would have figured something was up. Then, out of nowhere, the phone could not recognize my SIM card (AT&T). It switched to Emergency mode and would not switch back at all. I tried a hard reset. and the triple button, neither worked at all.
I am SO thankful that I browsed the forum for a few days before going to meet the seller. He knows it is a fake but was trying to sell it for $500. If he gets the signal to work, I wouldn't be surprised if he does sell it to some unsuspecting person that doesn't know. This problem is terrible. Now, I really do want an N95-4 after playing with the fake. I want the real one. I have an 8525 that I love because I tether to my Macbook when traveling on the weekend, but iSync is not supported (just MissingSync). I'd love a phone that works a little better with a Mac and DOESN'T run WM.

Certainly a fake/clone, and thanks for reporting about it, in great detail too, its appreciated.
Glad you escaped from being sold a clone as a direct result of n95Users forums.!
Shame you couldn't get photos of it, but never mind. It sounds like it was similar to one we have photos of already anyway, but any additional photos are very welcomed indeed.
As a note, regarding the M of Megapixel with the N95-4.....
It has recently been confirmed, that the N95-4 model does indeed have a lowercase "m" of megapixel, and of course, AF, instead of Autofocus. The N95-2 has the capital "M" of megapixel, and Autofocus, NOT AF.

If you have purchased a Cloned N95 on ebay, checkout this link..
eBay UK: Against Counterfeits: What are we doing to stop it?
Also, if you have been refunded after falling prey to the counterfeiters, but still have the clone in your possession, and want to help stop these falling into the hands of other unsuspecting buyers, please pm me with regards sending me the handset for a short period for research purposes. Im in talks with the BBC at the moment, and they want to borrow as many clones as possible for their investigation, which I will be helping. All postage costs will be returned by the BBC. The BBC will not purchase any clone, as this is profiting the counterfeiters.
Thanks for your help, and I look forward to your PM.
Micky
