So you're about to or just did update your FW

Ok so I myself just updated my N95-1 to V21. Since there's been a couple updates that just got released recently I wanted to start a thread to rehash some of the things I know we all forget since the last time we installed all 100 apps I know everyone has. Just a quick list of what to do before and what to remember after you update your FW, or even just reinstall the FW.

So before you get ready to update, since most probably haven't read our FAQ page, it's a good idea to make sure you have the install files for all the programs you have on there. Doing this before you update will help you remember everything you have installed. I have a nice folder labeled phone stuff with seperate folders of all the install files labeled to help ease reinstallation.

Next I would do a straight copy of your images and video folders to your computer and you can just copy them directly back onto your memory card after update. You can do the same with you Sounds folder as well. This is a good time to try to seperate your ringtones into the simple folder and leave your music in the digitial folder, this keeps your ringtones from showing up in the mp3 player.

If you have things arranged like myself I would also check the data folder and any other place you store media such as from emtube or any other programs like sports tracker.

It's usually a good idea to then format your memory card and then do the update. Once doen you can go ahead and start reinstalling and copying everything back to the phone.

Now that we're at the reinstall part here's somethings that I forgot and some of you might have as well, and some things that are nice for a quick lookup.

The latest python seems to be 1.4.2 so make sure you have that one installed.

acceleromter based programs need the accelerometer plug in installed, try to do this first.

The latest lightsaber I think is 1.5 and HAS to be installed on the PHONE MEMORY in order to work. (it has been a while and I forgot that one)

the latest sports tracker install file I have is xxxN95_3_1_v166 and it still doesn't seem to play nice with activity monitor so pick one for now.

if you install the web server widgets and such make sure you do this BEFORE you install python or reinstall python after you install the web server.

Panoman will need to be reinstalled and you probably had it sent to you on your phone so just reply to the original email the you updated the FW and they are pretty quick to resend you the software. Second time I've had to do this.

While we're on the subject it's ALWAYS a good idea to save all your order/payment confirmation emails that have registration codes because you will probably need them again.

If you are like me and addicted to themes thanks to Mr G try to keep them all in a seperate folder for later reinstall as they tend to grow in number quickly.

**Also for those of us in NAM and dont have a -3 or later don't forget to turn off the dual mode switching after this install. (searching for 3G will tend to run your battery down and if you don't have a -3 or later this is useless)**

I may also suggest taking note or a screen shot of your menu structure if you're like me and change it quite a bit. It is sometimes annoying to remember how you had everything set up once it changes

Ok so here it is in case you all are curious instead of a MUST HAVE, here's everything I have installed and I'll give a quick little explanation (if I can remember)

I must say, after reading that lot, it made me realise how unorganized I am, even though I thought I had my files, apps, games, and N95 related software in a place where I knew where they were, but how wrong was I. Its now your fault Im now giving my laptop an overhaul, and finally getting on top of all my phone related files, and whats on what phone folders etc. Glad I read this. I may have some Karma after Im done.

Well done chap!

Micky

well GSi gladded you're having fun moving and organizing everything, don't blame me I just put it out there.. Anyways I realized after my last FW update that I 1) forgot what programs I had installed and 2) couldn't find half the install files. It just makes the whole up date go a lot smoother in the end

Try this -
Put your install files in a folder and copy them to your mem card (or keep them on a special install mem card!) and then only install as you need them! Works on all the apps I use.
I would also add that an install to phone mem keeps things more stable.
