Email apps

Hi all, I'm hoping you can help me out with an email app question:

I need to access my gmail on my N95 8Gb on the UK 3 network. As I see it, I have three options: gmail app, native email client on the handset, or 3's own MobileMail system.

I've tried all three, and they all fall short of the mark in one way or another.

Gmail app: Great to view messages, but can't attach files and unless you keep it open in the background it won't alert you of new mail. Also runs a little slow.

Native email on N95: Probably the best of the three to be honest. I set it up to poll every 30 mins, which is fine. It handles sending and recieving attachments, it can be checked whenever I need and the link within the message are active. Problems? Had trouble downloading messages. It would tell me I had a new one, then when I went to the inbox I could see it there. Then it asked me to connect. If I looked at the message BEFORE connecting, then I could read it BUT as soon as I connected the message dissappeared! After the initial email 'bring down' the device would not keep any more messages. Weird. I'd like the fonts to be smaller too.

MobileMail: Can't see links and addresses etc as active (they don't highlight), and the connection is unreliable. Too often I go to check it and it's dropped or paused it's connection. It also has trouble with gmail, as each time it connects after being out of service, it displays all my messages as 'unread'.

I'm about to get all my work email forwarded to gmail account so I can get everything on the move. At the moment though, it's just not reiable enough. Can anyone help with the above? Is there a third party client I can use?

Cheers all. I might try it with my yahoo account too, just to see if it's a Gmail thing. It all worked perfectly with my Blackberry though, so I'm sure there's a way!!

Profimail might be the best. The native email client works perfectly for me

Hi all

Thanks for that! I've downloaded it and it looks pretty good. I'm going to see how the battery copes for a week or so though.

I can get the gmail account to download, but I can't send messages. I keep getting:

530 5.7.0 Must issue a
STARTTLS command first.
z37sm10113300ikz.1

Can anyone help with this?
Also, is there a way to make Profimail start up automatically when you switch the phone on?

cheers all!

Profimail is great, bought it ages ago and haven't looked back.

To send messages make sure you have your SMTP username+password set, also tick "Use SSL for IMAP", "Use SSL for SMTP" and "Use STARTTLS" from the Advanced Settings when editing the account. It allows you to keep it open and auto-update (allows you to hit "hide" and it sits in the background). There is no way to auto start in the program though there are other apps that will allow you to start apps automatically on boot.

you can install powerboot to startup the app and set profimail to retrieve your messages automatically if that's what you want.

I use Emoze, free push email client, works great with Gmail. I believe it can be configured with other emails, for example work emails such as yours. Check out their website and see if it'll help.

I really like Emoze, its not as flashy as Profimail, but it gets the job done - can be set to autostart on boot, integrates into messaging system nicely (and also integrates into the camera application as a sending option), just grabs plain text (uses little data, you can choose to open attachments though, but to view pics etc you'll need to hop into your browser), minimal impact on battery life.

EDIT: Just saw the recommendation for Powerboot - JBak taskman a better solution for autostart management. Its free, the best task manager software available, can reboot the phone (no need to install psy-restart), can do autostart management (no need to install Powerboot), along with a host of other features.

Flurrymail have just upgraded their app, it can check as many accounts as you wish, also rss feeds. Its free and has never let me down. Can handle some attachments.

It would be nice for a phone to handle mail as a PC does....... in time, patience.
