Data Plan required for the N95 in the US?

Hi, I've been looking at the N95 for awhile now and am about ready to buy one. I have one concern though that I hope someone can help me address before I make this purchase.

I'm in the US and I already have a contract w/ T-mobile, would I need to purchase the unlimited data plan to be able to use the full functionality of this phone? My worry is that if I don't get a data plan, the GPS or some other feature will constantly be grabbing data from somewhere and i'll be charged a lot of money for it.

I'm really excited about getting this phone, but it costs a lot of money. I gotta make sure I know the full cost of owning this phone. =]

While it isn't required, I STRONGLY recommend it. Either you'll end up connecting to the Internet not realizing what an application is doing and run up a large bill, or you'll be missing out on a LOT of what this device offers. I've been using Symbian OS for quite some time, and have found there to be a wealth of 3rd party applications that rely on Internet connectivity. While it's true the N95 has great wifi support, you don't want to be tethered to an access point all the time, and of course, most of the time you simply may not have that option.

I'd say go for it. I'm not sure what operators are charging these days for unlimited access, I've been grandfathered into a rediculous deal some time back when people really didn't use unlimited data and it was rather just a novelty. I'd say if you're the kind of user that will snatch up a mobile device at this price, you'll not regret getting an unlimited data plan here in the States. The prices aren't horrifying and the benefit on such a device as the N95 is just absolutely tremendous.

Go for it! 8)

Oh yeah- and welcome to the forum!!

I have the $5.99 unlimited internet with tmobile us, it only works on the cell (can't use the cellphone as a modem/connection for my laptop) but for $6 a month I can do little browsing, I can check the weather, the traffic, etc.

Is there anything you can't do with the $5.99 plan that the all inclusive ~$20 plan can do?

The 5.99 is not the internet, it is t-zone. The 20 dollar plan is the data plan that you need with the n95. The 5.99 plan will not even work with the phone b/c it is unlock.

I cannot stress this enough, 1/3rd of the benefits of this phone require internet connectivity in some way or form...and like psuedo said, you'e not around an access point all the time...my total usage since I got the phone as shown by my packet log is 662.75Mb received and 86Mb sent ...and this is all browsing and general everyday use via HSDPA (to be fair tho, I also use the phone to connect to my laptop during lunch sometimes)...an unlimited plan is a MUST...
