email setup

I've been trying to setup my email account (gmail) on my phone. It works, however, the custom port number for SSL authentication won't stay. Everytime I exit the email application the port reverts to "default port" and it will not stay at 993 (port I put in myself). Any help in this case?

Thanks

If I remember - mine also displayed "default port" after setting the alternative one but it did actually still work - as though it was just displaying something different than was set. Have you tried to see if it syncs ok?

Don't use a custom port, leave it on default and make sure the Security (ports) setting is SSL/TLS

That's how mine is set up anyway, and it functions correctly (IMAP).

It's because 993 is the default port number for IMAP over SSL..

Email is a massive part of my N95 8Gb's duties.

Not necessarily composing, but certainly reading and responding. I have tried just about all of the email solutions available for the N95/Symbian.

I have kind of settled on SEVEN system's beta push email. It integrates into the phone nicely and seems 100% reliable.

I also liked Profimail, but it wouldn't push and was hit and miss at sending.

Emoze was poor (In my opinion) and took an age to connect and stay connected. Unreliability is the main reason I ditched this. I also used the phone's native client, but it was clunky. Also, if it tries to poll a certain number of times without sucess, it removes the scheduling.

So far, SEVEN seems fast and reliable. I use Gmail and Yahoo with this. Both Push well.

I use the inbuilt mail client myself.. Works fine.. Never seen the need to bother with a third party client...

I usually only download my email onto it to read in the morning on my way to work though

I use the email side of things LOADS. It'd be nice to think that push email would take over sms. It would certainly be much cheaper for everyone, and more flexible.
I'm told they already do this in Japan et al.

I miss my blackberry for that reason. As soon as three release the BB Bold, I'll be in the queue. N95 trounces it in so many ways, but I miss the BB system massively.

I think I am going to give this seven app a try, as the profimail just will not send my e-mails. Don't get it. Anyhow, it seems the Seven does send e-mails judging by your comments. Has it worked 100% when it comes to ding just that?

Profimail displays the actual messages better than anything I've tried, but I just don't have faith in it's ability to send reliably. It's also a bit clunky with attachments etc, and doesn't integrate all that well with the symbian contacts list.

SEVEN sits within the Nokia's inbox menu, and works with all the native alerts and contact lists. I'm not saying it's the best for you, but it is for me. Horses for courses. AngusG uses the standard email function to good effect for example - I'm not a fan.

Also worth mentioning; I don't really notice any difference in battery usage - but then, my days are never typical so it's hard to say.

Also; it was someone on this forum that recommended SEVEN - I just can't remember who :(
