Different regions have their own Variants of firmware. It includes things like different language packs and different rules, like Asia Pacific (APAC) variants cannot turn off the camera shutter noise. In addition, Network Operators will release their own Variants of firmware with their own customisations. These typically are released later then the Generic Variants.
To find out what Variant you have, type *#0000#. The number in brackets on the last line is the Operator Variant. You can search on these forums or the internet for a description of what your number is.
There is also a Product Code printed on a label on the back of the phone under the battery. This number is also held in the phone and is used by the Nokia Software Updater (downloadable from the Nokia website) to decide what Operator Variant of firmware to download to your phone.
You can change this number with software; search on the forum for lots more information.
