n95 with fring / truphone

errr sorry I don't know how I post it in the wrong section. Could a moderator move it to general? Thanks.
Your wish is our command. ;)

Hi,

I'm using Skype on fring and I have to say the quality is really bad. I'm 100% sure it's not my connection as I'm on UK university backbone with no firewall and ports forwarded. I can get around ~100ms to most country however the 3-4 sec lags make it unuseable.

I have update both fring and my handset to the newest firmware. Anyone have same problem? I see on fring forum that some people said its fine and some said its terrible. So I wonder how did you guys find it? I'm talking about skype- skype calls and not skypeout. In addition n95 shuts down fring as soon as there is an incoming call. I know fring is still in beta stages but I wonder if anyone here find it useable?

I tried MSN audio call and that seems better than Skype with fring.

Today I decided to give truphone a try, I've just signed up and created an account. Haven't really called my friends on the other side of the world yet as its past their bed time.

It seems like truphone is giving free calls to landline AND mobile to over 40 countries. I made a landline call and the quality seems alright, haven't tried international calls yet. So anyone know whats the quality like?

give gizmo a try. Forget Fring. The software originted calls using an app like Fring just doesn't cut it.

Yeah but I'm trying to call my friends and family on Skype. They only got skype.

I'm now using truphone since there are many landlines / mobiles you can call for free and the quality is much better.

The problem that is really killing me with TruPhone is that it only freakin' works with wifi... i spent hours and hours trying to make it work with my t-mobile usa edge network but i always get the "No wireless network in range" message or some crap like that... this is really really really bothering the hell out of me..i have been searching like crazy for a solution...what won't it work with t-mobile edge.. fring works perfectly with edge through any sip account..and i am sure the voice quality would be much better if i could set up a sip account with the built-in sip feature through edge.. but so far .. no luck.. maybe it is a firmware problem with the n95.. maybe it only works with 3g data plans or wifi... anybody in the states managed to get the integrated sip feature work with edge???? Thank you.

I think it might be block by the network. I'm using vodafone and it doesn't allow me to connect to truphone if I try use their network. But I don't have unlimited data plans so I only use it on wifi.

Tmobile definitely blocking use of voip here in the UK (on certain Web and Walk tariffs).

I have used Truphone, Fring and voipcheap so far and Fring just did not cut it at all.Truphone is ok for quality but I have issue with the application itself.

Best bet is to use voipcheap. Excellent quality, free calls to many landlines and relatively easy to set up.

See fldude99's posting in the HowTo section for guidance.

Quality of voipcheap I can't fault at all. Having said that though, the quality of the new Truphone seems to have greatly improved and is certainly comparable.

From memory I think you must install the voipcheap application on the PC first in order to create your account, but don't quote me on that (there may be a way to do it on the site).

As far as rates are concerned, voipcheap looks to be good value for money and unlike Truphone, there is no mention of the free calls being a limited thing - ie. Truphone free calls set to be charged from December as I understand it.

The trade off of course is that like Skype and a few others, Truphone is quite popular whereas voipcheap is not in common use. Remember, only calls from one voip provider to the same provider are free in most cases - rather like the days of inclusive minutes in a mobile tariff only being valid for landlines and mobiles on the same network.

I have the same situation. I installed gizmo and voipcheap to the built in SIP settings and it only works with a wifi available. I use AT&T and I don't think there is any carrier blocking going on. However there is no way you can make an internet call work with any kind of quality with EDGE anyway. IMO using Fring on EDGE is only useful for text chatting with another skype user-the call quality is horrendous even on a wifi connection. I guess we will see if the built in SIP works on 3G when the US version of the 95 comes out. It is already confirmed that voipcheap works with 3G in the UK.

Voipcheap and Gizmo calls to other users of the same service are free but from the PC app only afaik. I don't think you can call user to user from the SIP profile on the N95
