Sounds like you have a branded handset - You will need to de-brand before you can update (If you want to update straight away)
Go here for a guide - But this DOES void all warranties!

Make sure you are downloading the official Nokia Software Updater and if the error re-occurs, please copy the exact error displayed (Or take a screenshot or something)

EDIT: Another thing i found - we can rename folders (don't think we could do that in previous firmwares - however i remember being able to do that with my E65..) and also, we can now move applications to the Root menu!

I'm a part-time voyeur in my spare time
EDIT: I think that was possible in the last firmware versions - I definitely know moving apps to the root folder was

Nope, still the same. The installer opens, and wants to start installing. a pop up then comes up and says "minmum memory requirement is 256MB"
I click OK, and then another pop up says "Installation operation failed, Fatal Error During Installation"
I'm gonna cry!

It is tlking about the size of your RAM - This is pretty essential as it will need this amount to funtion
If the appliction causes an error during a firmware update, your phone may be damaged beyond repair
I would recommend doing the update from a different computer with higher specs if you have access to one

Just woke up on this side of the pond to some great news!
So in order to do a clean upgrade, is it safe to restore just contacts and calendar from PC suite or rebuild from scratch? Gizmo mentions not restoring photos and videos but thats easy just using the PC. Obviously settings and apps will have to all be reinstalled..thx

You can check the amount of RAM you have installed by going to:
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information
It will be listed under 'Total Physical Memory'
