Question Audio Input

I've been using the recorder on the N95 for recording interviews and the quality is decent, but I know if I was able to hook up a better microphone to my N95 that I could get excellent quality.

Problem is, when I plug in my microphone, the software only lets you select an output option. But the same port is used for a wired headset, so I know it is capable of inputing audio.

The question is how do we get the phone ro recognize my microphone cable as an input rather than an output and get the recorder to grab that audio?

Any ideas?

Chris there's a few solutions you could go for. One would involve a BT car kit and using the mic that comes with that but not sure you'd get a better quality.

There's a Reuters kit The Mobile Journalism Toolkit contents - Reuters Mobile Journalism
and I'm not sure what they mean by 'speacial adapter plug' but it might be found in the answer here... found on the net

"We've done the external mic succesfully both as a wireless solution and as wired. Using a bluetooth mic will work, but beware that there are audio conflicts between bluetooth and WiFi on the N95. So if using bluetooth, use operator connection only.

If you want to use a wired external mic, buy a 4 pole 3.5mm jack, not the standard 3 pole headphone jack. Wire the outer two connections too your mono mic, and leave the other two unconnected. That's all there is to it. Your microphone may require a power source depending on the model.

The Reuters toolkit shows a Sony ECM-MS907 mic. This is stereo and not needed as the N95 can only accomodate a mono input.

We also made an adapter to allow a wireless FM signal to feed audio via the internal FM receiver. This is great for bands or lectures. use the uadio from the mixing console and walk around the room with the N95, still getting the same clean signal."

I'll see if I can find out more about the FM reciever or the special adpater but hope this helps for now.

Yeah- I've been asking a few Nokians about this kit- but they've unfortunately not been of much assistance. A couple have said they will look into it, but I never hear anything back. :(

This is probably way too late but I came across this on accident. When you plug in your microphone, and it prompts you to select what to do just select headset. This will mute your phone but its ok. Just open the recorded and begin recording from your mic. then unplug it before playing it back and it should be ok. This works because the headset option means that it will be doing both input and output. You may have to pull the mic input a little bit out of the port on the phone so the contact lines up correctly or you may not have to.

I just realized that this person will probably never find this. I hope someone finds it helpful.
