Rogers + GPS

Hi there,
I just bought an N95-3 yesterday and still getting familiar with everything on the phone. I was just wondering (anyone that's with Rogers) if I get charged by my service provider if I use to GPS function?
Also, I'm having a hard time getting the GPS to work. Is there any setups I have to do if I bought the phone brand new?

Thanks,
sp00ks

what exactly are you having trouble with using the GPS?

it costs absolutely nothing to use the GPS function itself. This is a direct connection to satelittes and is used to determine your position on earth. however theres a thing called GPRS which is a form of mobile internet that the phone can use to help the GPS find where it is quicker. it sends a small amount of data to find the nearest cell tower to you and then works out where you are. This will cost you, but very minimal amounts. Check with Rogers as to the costs.

Depending on the navigation software you use, they will cost you, but actually using the GPS doesnt. for more info, use the search feature at the top of the page. theres heaps of threads on here.

Its unfortunate that the two have such similar abbrev. and makes it confusing for the first little bit.

You name sounds familiar.....

Hi mate

I am also bundled with Rogers , there is no absolutely cost of using GPS . In order to view your location go to menu>tool> connectivity > GPS DATA and then open it and go to POSITION ( you have to be in open area where GPS can find satellites ) and then press OPTION > Satellites STATUS , you will see bars so you have to wait until thsese bars get darked and that means that GPS found you location and then simply go to Nokia maps and you can see your location on the map. If you didn't download Maps then go to here http://www.smart2go.com/en/download and download Nokia MAP APPLICATION after that you have install NOKIA MAP LOADER http://www.smart2go.com/en/help/maploader on your pc so it can transfer Canada map to your N95(Memeory Card) .

Finally , The GPS may take 1 min-5 min to locate you location however, you can Enable A-GPS ( Assisted GPS) to get your location in 3 -10 seconds but it need internet connection so it will charge 15 cents because rogers charge 5c/kb and A-GPS transfer 3 kb-4kb so it only a small fee . If you dont know how to enable A-GPS ask me

You can use it with the simcard in.... Just that when it asks ur permission to use a network, deny the permisson... But remeber that then Agps wont work for you...
Other option is to be in a wifi zone and use that as access to internet.....It should work the same

Send a message via MSN to mariokarter
download the map for ontario in nokia maps and it wont cost you anything. i recommend deleting all rogers access points from your phone as you can run up a huge bill fast as every app uses the internet. Also google maps is much nicer for directions but requires access to internet (ie wifi).

You don't really have to delete your rogers access points.

Just go to Maps > Options > Settings > Network and set Use network to NEVER. As king601 and drgopoos said, it'll just take longer to get the initial gps position without A-GPS.

I tried out driving with just the GPS option and it was reflecting my current position pretty accurately.

Hey I just bought my nokia n95 and started to use the gps. The next day I got a message that says "you have incurred $50 of your pay-per-use charges on your mobile internet." Then i got the same text message but this time it says "you incurred $100 of your pay-per-use...." What does this mean? Does it mean I will get charged 50-100 dollars on my next bill? Please help me on this issue.

Seems like you will get charged. As mariokarter suggested, delete all your rogers access points. Even after setting the use network to never on my phone, it was still using it and i did get charged.
