Current GPS software status

***Updated 8th August 2008***

Since we have so many people asking what the current state of play is, I thought Id post this and keep it updated. Its deliberatly not giving any sort of opinion on the various packages, that can be found in many other threads.

This is a full list of satnav packages for Symbian S60V3 phones, excluding software which only downloads maps over the air (Amaze etc).

For as long as Im on the forum, I'll keep this as up to date as possible.

Tomtom - Works on seemingly all S60V3 phones, but is not supported. Nor does it use any internal GPS on Nokias. There may be something on the horizon, more when I find out.

Nokia maps 2.0 - Released as a finished application.

Garmin - Have a fully working, fully supported bit of software. It has recently had an update which fixed a bug.

However they do not support the N95 8GB, as the program is locked to card, and therefore you cannot legally get it on a phone without a card slot.

An over the air version is being released, and also a new version of XT with new interface. ETA September

Navigon - Have a fully working version which supports the internal GPS. Has not been an update for a while however.

Copilot - Version 7 for symbian is released now. It will take time to filter through to the stores (Amazon etc). Be aware that its now one version for both WM and Symbian. But the WM only versions will continue to be around for a while, so make sure which your buying.

Navicore (now rebranded Wayfinder) - The online version (over the air maps) available. The onboard (maps included, no need to download over the air) still not available. The onboard version will retail at 79 Euros for Europe. Still no word on the new onboard version, now overdue.

Route66 - Have released version 8, which obviously works with the internal GPS. They support most S60V3 phones. Version 7 is also compatible with internal GPS.

Sygic - Has been released under the name of McGuider.

None of the above. There are no free ones that give as good a performance as the regular commercial ones IMO. Of course opinion is subjective, but by and large you will find people agree.

Also, I dont include any that have to use data. I.e. those that download map data over the air.

There are a few out there, nav4all (which I wouldnt touch with a bargepole), amaze, and a few others.

Feel free to try them as long as you have a good data tariff. As far as I know, there isn't any free ones which include maps, they are all over the air.

If you find one though, let me know and I'll add it to the list.

I suspect you wont, because I imagine they have to pay for map data in some way, and by keeping it download only, they are negating a huge portion of the cost, hence they are able to do it for free.

Actually, that applies to everyone. If anyone finds a new satnav out (or in development) that doesnt use the over the air method that isnt listed, please let me know. Cheers.

Does anyone know if the Route 66 mobile 8 is on a "proprietary" mem card that must be inserted similar to the Garmin system? If so, that would put a major inconvenience on using it IMO...thx

Another bump, as I have just been given more information (Wayfinder).

New news is in blue.

BTW, fldude99, see here: ROUTE 66 Geographic Information Systems

N95 8GB is listed, so its not locked to card.

OK thx..I see a DVD is provided, so I assume the maps are downloaded to the mem of the phone or the card.

BTW I use over the air wayfinder 7 and it works great. Maps are available on their website to download to the device making those areas almost like an onboard version, using little data

Sorry, dont know that one, having a 6110.

I have heard Tomtom has issues, but if you rotate it before you start TT, then its ok. Other than that, I dont know Im afraid.

Unless of course, someone wants to donate me an N95 for testing ;)

Thanks McBain :)

I don't mean between landscape and portrait I mean give you the Tom Tom like view as apposed to say the google maps view. I'm just getting annoyed with google maps when I have to figure out which way to turn when say hading south because the screen just shows a top view and not like Tom Tom where the view is from your perspective
