Maps 2.0 Female Voice

I posted up in another thread that I'd have a go at modifying the Maps config.xml file to get the female voice back. You can install the female voice using the Map installer but there doesn't appear to be an option to change between the two.

Really simple method... find and download a text editor which opens an array of files, such as UNIX/Mac/DOS files (Such as Edit Pad Lite) and open the E:\cities\english\config.xml file on your phone memory card.

Find/Replace the word male with female.

That's it.. done. Make sure you take a backup of the original config file as I've only tested this once for a 20 mile journey and even though it worked for me I give no guarantee that it will work for anyone else. I will not be held responsible for any ToC or ToS you will be breaking by editing the file, nor for any damage caused to your phone or maps application (hence why I haven't simply provided the file).

Something else I'm going to try tonight is to mix and match, change a few back to male and see how it sounds with mixed male and female voices... should be interesting.

Thanks Purp. Although I like the male voice better than a female one it's good to know you can change back and even mix them.

...
My N95 is in "as-is" condition when purchased new and has Maps already installed.

My directory structure is:
E:\cities\ENGLISH\english_male\config.xml
E:\cities\ENGLISH\english_male\(many sound files)
E:\cities\english_us\english_us_male\config.xml
E:\cities\english_us\english_us_male\(many sound files)
E:\cities\FRENCH\french_female\config.xml
E:\cities\FRENCH\french_female\(many sound files)

I don't know why there is "English Male" _and_ "English US Male" _and_ no "French Male" but it doesn't
look like I can have "English Female" on _my_ phone.

I suspect that making the changes you suggested would (on _my_ phone) result in silence or an error.

Bload.

All i did was rename the english female folder to english_us and the folder inside to english_us_male,

Then from inside nokia maps just select usa language and it uses female voice instead!

easy!

another cool trick. if you have the time.

make a backup of the wav audio files in the english_male or similar folder.
then record yourself saying the exact same thing.
make sure that for every file, you record another the same, with the same name.

hey presto, you are guiding yourself!!!!!

Bload - you have to EDIT the config.xml file in the ENGLISH folder. That's for my method anyway.

Interesting, it would take forever but it would be a bit of an ego trip :)
