I learned belatedly that the version I bought did not come with the Symbian installation files. This meant that my n95-1 simply refused to see it after I copied it on to my memory card - or, indeed, even when I inserted the 1GB card supplied in the manufacturer's pack.
|
Thats odd, it was on the pack I had. Are you sure you didnt get one of the old windows mobile only packs?

Furthermore Copilot Central, the PC/laptop-based element of the system refused to recognise my phone when connected, so I was unable to download any maps.
Seems to involve Data Transfer Mode - if you can get your n95 to switch to that.

Im sure it says something about that in the manual/guide. All such programs like that (bar nokia stuff which can use nokia PC suite mode) need it to be in data transfer mode.

while Nokia Maps uses a-gps, Copilot apparently doesn't. I'm told they are working on a fix for this but, in the words of the chap I spoke to, it may not happen until the next version is released.

Now that I didnt know. And its extremely odd, because on mine it takes the same time as other programs. But then its said the 6110 has a much better position of the reciever, although you should easily be able to notice the difference. I wonder what they mean by 'next version'. Next update, or actual next paid for version?

disturbingly, (very rare) episodes where the screen has directed me to turn right and the voice to turn left. Also had several incidents where my phone has restarted while using Copilot - although I'm now informed that could be either a conflict with my Nokia bluetooth handsfree or, more likely, a RAM issue on the phone.
|
Never had that, in a lot of driving. But thats really not good. And unless you have loads of programs running (using up RAM) then its not a RAM issue. I used mine on a 6110, which has very little RAM for running programs, much less than any other S60 V3 phone.
GPS programs are far from perfect. One of the main things is, you dont know if an error is down to the map or the program. If its the map, you can excuse it. But if its the program...
The huge advantage I have over many other people is that I have used so many satnav programs. One of the benefits of this is that I pretty much know what are map errors on my routes, and whats not. Copilot, in general is a good program, and one of the ones Id trust (never completely though, not for any satnav).
However, that it doesnt use AGPS is a very strong minus point to take into consideration.
I have to say something about Sygic too, having tested it for quite a while (review coming at some point ;) ).
Its simply not trustworthy. First, it tells me to do stupid things which I know are not map errors. For example, theres a mini roundabout on my way to work. It tells me to do a U turn when I have to go right. Even though onscreen, it has me going in the correct direction.
It also directed me the wrong way up a one way street (luckily I knew about it), which I also know for a fact is on the maps. How worrying is that?
There is also an issue with postcodes for some people. They cannot put in certain ones due to a glitch. While I have had this sorted, the update is not available to normal consumers, so if you buy it, you still run the risk of getting it.
Nokia maps is not a good satnav. For starters, its expensive. Secondly, its got so little functionality, its a real hinderance. I had a brief moan about it here:

As for whats on the horizon....
Garmin is releasing a new version, supposedly very soon, which looks like it gets rid of the nasty interface so many people dont like. Personally, Im waiting for that one, especially since the current one doesnt work on FP2 phones.
Wayfinder are also releasing a new version which uses stored maps. Traditionally, they have only done over the air satnavs, but they tell me they are doing one which will replace navicore 2007. Navicore is a company they took over some time ago.
And as you can see, every single one has its problems. Which is what drove me to looking for, and ultimatly reviewing satnavs for symbian. I figure since Im looking so much into it, I may as well lets others seee what I have found, and since everyone is different, let them choose based on much more information.
Previously, Garmin XT was my one of choice, because it had the best features and the negatives I could easily put up with (mainly, the bad UI). However now Im really stuck, since Garmin wont work on my 6220C, I cant activate copilot, Navigon is too far out of date and I cant activate that either, Sygic I just dont trust, and all I have to rely on at the moment is my free 90 day nokia Maps subscription!
