Question GPS data on PC

Hi Guys,

Has anyone got/heard of any way of getting raw GPS data from the handset to a PC via bluetooth or data cable? I'm sure it's possible to create an app for it, but I'm lazy LOL.

Cheers

Interesting....I don't have the answer for you right now, but why would you want to do that?

Nokia Sports Tracker (Free download from their website) uses the inbuilt GPS, and can export data in KML format for input into Google earth. I suspect there are many apps to convert KML data to other formats if that's what you need.

Hope this helps,
P

Loaded map files not found

Hi,

I used the recommended Map Loader software to download and install some maps onto my MicroSD card but can't seem to find the files anywhere. I first used the N95's Maps program to find my position and plot routes to neighboring towns. Then I put the microsd card into the N95 and fired off the MapLoader s/w. After an interminably long period of visible activity, it reported that the files were installed. But I can't find any such files on the card, using explorer in Windows or File Manager on the device.

Next, I took the card and put it in the adaptor and placed that in the PC slot, then did the same thing. This time, it was markedly faster in downloading several files at once. But once again, I cannot find trace of any of the downloaded maps, not in any of the directories on the card. Moreover, using my N95's GPS has not got any easier - it is still waiting ages in Maps, after getting the satellite lock.

Where are the maps supposed to be saved, and how does one know these files are on the card? I would appreciate any help with this. My N95 is really impractical as a GPS device for me at this stage.

Cheers

Sopp
PS. A possible clue is that when I connect the N95 to the PC by cable, I get a message that the device is connected in "non-compatible mode" and that this can be changed from the Phone UI, without explaining where on the phone's menus this can be done. Anybody knows what that message means, and how to get the compatible mode? Cheers.

Iam not sure where the files are stored but regarding the "non-compatible mode", when you connect the usb cable to the phone, it will ask you whether you want to connect as PC suite, mass storege etc. You have to select mass storage.

Thank you for the helpful response, but I do select mass storage. In fact, that message only fails to appear when I select PC Suite, although I obviously cannot use that for downloading the files. This is quite baffling.

Cheers

Chris

Chris,
After you restart your phone, connect your USB cable again; your Nokia should come up with the three choices; this time select "PC Sync" and you should be back in the game.

I actually had exact same problem with the map loader. At first I thought the maps are stored locally on the hard drive and then one would have to transfer them to the phone. However, it seems that they are not.
I know for sure that all the maps should go into the folder called "private" on the card.
Since I could not find the maps, I asked my friend to zip his up for me and copied them to my SD card.
However, I have an impression that Nokia Maps software does not detect the maps that I copied.
I am completely confused.
All my searches seem to return distances related to Germany.

Thank you, that does get rid of the non-compatible mode issue. But I am still looking for an answer to my Maps downloading problem. Anybody know why the Maploader cannot apparently save downloaded maps on my micro sd card?

Cheers

GPS Map location

Hi Soppante
If you connect via USB cable and select data transfer you can then explore your
memory card like any other drive. Select the drive, on your PC go to tools - folder options - view and select 'show hidden files'. You can then see several hidden files, your downloaded GPS maps will be stored in the private folder.

It seems that the file size will depend on how you have formatted your memory card.

Hope this helps
