Exclamation No idea how to make the GPS work in Toronto!!

Well guys .. I am in Toronto Canada. And when I click on the MAP icon ... the loading of the globe will appear and then ask me for my WLAN network ... then it asked me to enter the WEP key for WLAN. What is "WEP Key"? And how I can find out what is my WEP KEY? I guess I am not even there to download any maps here in Ontario ... so I am not sure how well this GPS works ...
Definitely need help on this one ... and especially those who are also in Canada .. cuz we have a similar network system here ...

WEP is Wireless Encryption Protocol. Its the key or password you assign to your wireless router so a wireless device (such as your phone) can have access to the internet. You have to login to your router for you to find out what your WEP key is.

You have 2 options to download the maps onto your fone. Either you use Wifi or use Maploader. You can download Maploader on the Smart2go website. With the maploader you pre-install the maps you want. Example, you can download Ontario onto your memory card. Its good if your going on a trip where wi-fi is not always available.

Have fun!!!

I've used the GPS in TO... just load the maps onto your card using maploader as krycek said..... then set the maps application to use "Rogers Internet" or the Fido equiv if you're on v12 firmware to take advantage of AGPS.

the WEP key is part of the security on your 802.11 (read home wifi) network, and not part of the Rogers/Fido service.

Nokia Europe - Download

That's a link to the maploader download, download that, and install it.
then you can just load the Ontario map onto your phone, it's what I did, and it's working rather nicely.

Ok, first I have no idea how you got it working. I am totally lost. Everytime I turn on the maps it focuses on some place on Europe. It does not get a signal with its internal GPS. I guess I have to allow network access, but I have no idea how to set up Rogers/Fido internet access and the information required for the following fields: (or even how to set up AGPS)

To set up AGPS look on the GPS section of this forum, but you don't need it for the GPS to work. You will only have AGPS as an option of you have the v12 firmware (*#0000#)

If you haven't got your Internet settings you should be able to get your network operator to send them to you in a text or use Menu > Tools > Settings Wizard, but you don't need this either if you use the Nokia Maploader software from the Nokia website to download the Maps on to your phone.

Stand outside with the Phone slider open and held at 45 degrees and start Maps. Go to Options > View > Satellite info. You should see some numbers listed down the left hand side of the Satellite Status screen. There will be hollow bars at first whilst the GPS calculates its positon. Once it has locked some of the bars will turn into solid bars.

To get from Europe to where you are takes time the first time it tries to lock. After that it will be much quicker.

Stand still in the open air. You will get lock on first.

If you see the map then it is loaded, and just wait 2 minutes for internal inferior GPS to get a lock on to satellite.

My external Bluetooth GPS can pick up 8 satellites at the same time and get it in 2 seconds.

You just have to wait for the Nokia internal ones.

Just stay still... don't move haha.

The time it takes for any GPS unit to lock (when the bars go black) depends on how long and how far since it was last used. If it has never been used, the GPS sees both these numbers as quite large and consequently can take many minutes to work out where and when on the planet it is.

It should get the empty bars quite quickly - just wait for them to go black. It needs signals from more than one satellite; at least three and preferably five. If you haven't got at least four hollow bars you should try and find somewhere more open to the sky with fewer buildings around.

And like takahashi says, try not moving around for this first lock.

once you've had the first lock, subsequent ones will be much quicker. Mine took less than a minute after bieng switched on one country and two days later without AGPS.
