GPS on the move - won't lock
Hi folks,
Just purchased my N95 last week, been playing with all the new stuff on it, particularly the GPS function, I have installed Maps and Route66, but I do have one major issue with them both... well, not with the applications, but with the phone itself.
When I am stationary, and located outside or in my car - I can generally get a GPS signal quite quickly (ie: within' 1-5 mins), and both Sat Nav applications mentioned above will work, and track my movements when I start driving/walking etc..., so all ok there.
My problem occurs when I am driving, I open up the phone and load up the sat nav software route 66 or maps or GPS data and for whatever reason I am not able to get a lock on my position, I can however pick up multiple satellites while on the move, but they don't seem to lock my position until i come to a standstill, is this normal ??, is there a way around this ??
My N95 is on Orange, and is using v11.0.026 of the device software.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks, Vaughn.

Stop the car, then try to get a lock.
Not being sarcastic but it sounds like the best option to me.
PS,i can get a lock sometimes when i try to whilst moving, but other times i can't.

It could be the coating on your windscreen and windows of your car. Are they tinted windows?
It's not a fault of your device. Also try upgrading to firmware version 12 using 'Nokia Software Updater' available from Nokia's website. If you don't know what AGPS is and how to turn it on once you've finished the update, then have a look around here for some guides there has been plenty of explanations on how to set it up. Its a piece of cake.
Maybe the AGPS will help you but to be honest I think its your windshield dampening the signal.

I've updated the device software to the latest that Orange will allow, is there a way of forcing the latest Nokia firmware on to the phone ??
Assisted GPS - yeh, I am familiar, and it is an option.
I've tried GPS on the move in a couple of cars so far, in my BMW, and a friends Peugeot 306, surely tinted windows won't stop the phone getting a lock on a location, the same tint is present when stationary or moving, if this is the case - that seems very flimsy to me and I would anticipate the majority of N95 users to have problems getting a lock when on the move.
In addition to this - most cars these days have some sort of tint included, most of the time its a very light tint, but its there.

Yes you can put the latest Nokia fw on your handset, search for de-branding.
So you haven't used the A-GPS then as this does really help?

You can but this will void your warranty with Orange. If you have Orange Care, then do NOT debrand. They'll examine you handset, then charge you the full cost of an N95! £400+ on your next bill sir?

Thanks for the replies guys...
Ok, I changed the firmware code using Nemesis Service Suite, and then updated normally via the Nokia updater - all went without a hitch, so at present I am running the latest official N95 firmware, which has AGPS included, after setting everything back up and re-installing Route 66 I set about testing, and I can confirm that it did lock on while on the move, I have not tested it extensively, but will do so over the next few days/weeks/months, but initial tests seem like the problem has been resolved - all I want now is free GPRS on my Orange contract ;)
Another question - not GPS related, does the Nokia N95 have the ability to display smilies in text messages ??
Also - is there any eta on Tom Tom supporting the N95's internal GPS unit ??
