Can anyone tell me exactly how that is done? I live in Barbados and would like a map for my N95.

If there is a map available for your area, all you need to do is set Nokia Maps to 'Use Network' under settings, and then choose a valid access point. If the maps program pinpoints your GPS location but has no mapping data for that location, then it will automatically download the map tiles over the web. Be patient, depending on your area it could take a few minutes.
But as Mr G said, if it's not available in map loader then it most likely won't work at all. You could always send an email to Nokia and ask them if Barbados falls under the list of 150 countries they say they have maps available for.
