KEYRING BLUETOOTH GPS RECEIVER for N95

While folowing a link on this fourms about the new 8MB SD Card I came across this Keyring GPS Reciever.

As I managed to get TOMTOM on my N95 my next thought was I would need a GPS Reciever.
I got a friend to order me one up which arrived today.

Well I gave this a quick try out while doing a bit of shopping and a trip to my m8's house - (walking).
He had a look at it and was very impressed by it. After a brief chat he gave me a lift home.

Now here's the best bit......

Last week while on a trip to Glasgow we tried his N95 and his GPS Reciever. Well it wouldn't work --- NO GPS SIGNAL ???
He thought that this would happen as his car is an Audi Quatro which has double glazing and some sort of reflective tint on the windows?
He told me that there was no end of people on forums complaining about the lack of Signal by GPS Recievers in these type of cars.

Well anyway on the way (lift home) we tried out my new Keyring GPS Reciever.....

Whooppeee it was picking up a signal :) It did have a couple of hiccups but we weren't really expecting it to work at all in his car.

I'll try it out on a longer journey over the weekend and report back on my findings.

Forgive the simple question, but I'm an old fart and keeping up with all this stuff is tough.

Am I understanding this correctly? Bluetooth, on the GPS, is used to get a satellite signal from an external, dedicated satellite receiver, rather than the built in N95 receiver?

Yes, alot of people prefer to use external GPS modules, generally motor drivers

-The N95 is not limited to any certain positions when connected via satellite
-The battery on the N95 is not used up as quickly (Considerably slower actually)
-Many users report stronger signals and quicker connections when using the GPS modules

TopCat... That looks very neat and compact, it might be a solution if TomTom don't hurry up and get their fingers out and release an N95-compatible version soon!

When testing it, can you check its perfomance when dangling and swinging about near the ignition switch on a keychain please? I'm rather hoping that you don't have to remove it and place it somewhere optimal each time you use it. Thanks...

I thought they needed clear sight to the sky to work?

For best results, yes - But the limitation is not always as strict as it is made out to be

With the N95, Nokia stresses that you should have the device in clear view of the sky like you say, but the N95 also has a big metal plate sitting right above the GPS receiver when the keypad is closed - Obviously not the best for making a connection

External GPS modules won't have any obstructions like this so are a little more flexible

So far I have had it in my jeans back pocket/ thick lumberjack type shirt pocket, and its working fine.
Though when I tried it in my m8's car (AUDI) I was holding it on the dashboard. I'll get him to attach it to his car keyring when we do our sunday trip to Glasgow.

I was wondering myself overnight just how STRONG this little thing is - Signal wise? I suppose I could try putting it into a small metal tin - (old tobbaco tin) and see how it performs.

..... or things to consider but would never try!

Cut a hole in a watermelon - wrap GPS in a small plastic back - insert into watermelon - carry melon around.

Insert into the back end of a horse and ride it around the countryside.

Tis obvious this little device is sirf3, whereas the N95 is sirf2 LP (low power).

Sirf3 chipsets are probably the best commercial ones out there.

Took a trip to pick up a m8 at Edinburgh Airport. Got my other m8 who's car it was (Vauxhall Astra) to hang the GPS from his car keys. It worked a treat, only trouble was my phone battery ran out near the end of the trip back.

I'll still try it out on my other m8's car (AUDI) over the weekend.
