GPS Software and Use

I have just recently bought the N95 and so far I really like it.

One of the reasons (although a small and definitely not defining reason) was the inbuilt GPS. I have since discovered that this isn't all it's cracked up to be. I have extreme difficulty locking on to satellites and once I do, it hardly seems worth it as it loses this connection quite quickly.

I am sure that this is an issue that could be resolved if I put my mind to it and played with the feature a little more, put having read a lot of the various threads around, I decided it wasn't worth it.

Instead, I have just bought myself a Bluetooth GPS device from Ebay which I expect to receive within the next week or so.

What I would like to know is which software is recomended.

Now I hear a lot of people talking about the various data plans with their network provider. Surely this should be irrelevant???

Is there any software that doesn't require a network connection (except to download new maps).

If I had a TomTom then I wouldn't expect to make network connections. I would expect the same thing from my n95.

I have downloaded Amaze just to see what it is like, but this seems to want a network connection.

So, could somebody please explain to me why this is and what I can do to avoid it.

Much appreciated,

Tomtom is generally regarded as the best Satnav software for the N95. It will only use a network connection if you use traffic or weather updates.

Some GPS software relies on you downloading the maps over the air as you go along. Most don't.

Thank you :)

Now that I know that I don't need to pay as I use I am much happier.

I'll have a look around but will likely settle on TomTom (after I have tried some of the free software of course!)

In my expirence there isnt a free one worth bothering with, they all seem vastly inferior to paid for satnav. Most 'free' ones you find will require a data connection, usually for downloading content.

If your getting a BT reciever, tomtom is definatly the way to go. Ive tried about 6 or 7 different satnav programs, some free, most not and tomtom wins by a large margin.

Garmin mobile XT now work with N95 internal GPS. It's a great program IMO. Was using Route66 before that (work OK) but cannot compare to Garmin.
Amaze GPS is good as far as free is concern but you need a good data plan.
