N95 8 gb second sd card slot
Hi guys,
i own now my N95 8gb for some 3 weeks and just wondered if it may be possible to fit in an extra card slot.
Okok 8gb is normally sufficient and nobody would try to rip off the soldered samsung sd chip (in fact its an sd card soldered directly on the connectors for the old n95 card slot) and replace it with an microsd card connector.
So i dived the net and finally found the schematics for the n95(rm 159 and 254 so not the rm320 aka 8gb, who has these schematics plz post).
What i found is astonishing:
- they use the same chip (sure) called menelaus aka n4200
- the menelaus chips supports 2 memory "slots" connected to MC.S1xx and MC.S2xx pins
- the microsd connector on the non-rm320s is connected to the MC.S1xx pins leaving MC.S2 not connected
- the "mass memory" on the rm320 is connected to the MC.S2xx pins leaving MC.S1 not connected
so it should be possible to connect an extra microsd card connector to the now unconnected MC.S1 pins of the menelaus chip following the rm159/254 schematics!
Things to be checked before:
- are the chip pins really unconnected or are there already circuits on the board leading to unconnected soldering points ?
- the rm320 schematics are needed to be sure the wiring is still the same and to compare it with the rm159/254 schematics
- is there any space left to fit in a microsd connector somewhere ?
- pray that the phone has enough power on the 3V line to support 2 microsd cards (the second beeing the 8gb chip soldered on the board)
if the circuits are there then maybe a broken rm150/254 would be the best donor for the microsd connector...
so nice dreams,
Ferron

Wouldn't it be nice if you could just slap on an iPod 160GB HDD?
My 5th Gen 80GB iPod serves as my mobile library with about 35Gb of music and video on it. Only about 5GB of that has made it onto my N95 8GB. It'd be nice to meld the 2 devices into one.
I once had a dream, which i labeled "Frankenstein's Mobile", where i had a phone backed onto the back of an iPod, and put into this rather crude case. It looked like some 80's brick phone, and of course the 2 units worked completely independent of each other cuz i have no idea what i'm doing. Still, a man can dream...

yeah, nothin' like a bit of iphone bashing.
Saved a mate from the dark side this week and hooked him up with an N82.
He's as happy as a dog with two d***s

Well.. I suppose it should be possible.. A microSD dont pull much juice from the phone to power up, so i dont think that would be a problem.. But i suppose the best bet would be to solder another card directly into the connector, a card dont take up much space, but i dont think there is enough space for a slot to fit in there.. i think the 8gb card is located where the slot used to be now.. Maybe they even use the same controller in the upcoming N96, which has both slot and internal memory.. I wish they did the same with the N95 8gig, cause i dont really like the N96 design, but i love the N95 8gig design, which basically is the exact same phone except for the DVB-H thing that isnt supported in norway anyway...
Only surprise that would be coming is how the OS in the N95 8gig would handle two different memory cards..

I agree with you bro...I love the N95 8GB design,I don't like the N96 design...but you forgetting one big advantage the N96 has...Feature Pack 2...brings a number of improvements...

Yeah.. Thats right.. And i suppose that we will not see a firmware upgrade for the N95 8gig with the FP2, even it should not be a problem at all to make it work on the N95 8gig at all.. :)
