N95-1 Mod to use US 3G?
Just wondering if this is possible, seeing as I got the RM-159 and would consider it cost effective to replace a chip rather than buy a new phone.
Browsing through the service manual and such, but I'm sure that many here know more than I on this topic.
Thanks in advance

I'm going to go with unless you are DARN (can't say the other word) good with electronics then NO. I'm not even sure if you could if you are really good at it. The other thing to is to check with your service provider and see how well 3G is covered in your area. I had the same dilemma until I relaized 3G isn't covered in most of the areas I'd want to use it.

Thanks for the hint Jkop, I am pretty sure I wouldn't be able to do this without a good amount of research and some serious help from some engineer buddies. But I do have a pretty nice lab/work area.
Also, the ATT 3g Coverage does not indicate support for data in my area (Thanks again!). Although I tend to hop from coast to coast semi-frequently for business.

yeah you would need some SERIOUS help more than it would be worth to pull that one off.
I have ATT and I'm on the East Coast and noticed their coverage isn't great so I stopped wanting for 3G.

As the N95-3 is designed to use a different UMTS band, I suspect that there's considerably more modification involved than just an IC-swap, associated smc circuitry and perhaps even the antenna itself for a start! With no 3G coverage locally, it'll be fun testing it!
Converting a mono tv to colour might be a (slightly) more practical project! ;)

That's not neccessarily the governments fault and there's many reasons why things were chosen when it comes to frequencies and technologies that are used for cellular communication. Now why they pick different standards then everyone else outside of that who knows
