Talking Upgrading Firmware when not allowed by NSU

<html>
<body>
I'm pretty sure this is going to be moved into Software Hacks but I'm placing this thread here for everyone who is saying they cant upgrade their firmware because of their product code

Firstly if you want to check what is the latest Firmware release for you Nokia without having to wait for NSU to get off it's nice sofa on your computer and go into that great big nasty world of what we call the web to check for you you can enter you product code at this web site and it will check for you Click Me!

Note: I hold no responsibility to what you do to your N95 (or any phone for that matter) choosing to follow these instructions are under your own decision, DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR PHONE AT ANYTIME DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS, I recommend you having it on charge while your upgrading it even if you do have a full battery I've bricked my twice and its a pain to unbrick. A lot of people have asked if there is a chance that doing this could mess up or brick your phone, your not doing anything other then changing a number on your phone which identifies the region of which your phone is intended for thus it will download the firmware intended for that region (usually including language packs and some extra software which has been sponsored for that region as well) the risk of bricking or screwing up your phone is the same as updating it any phone, change product code or not the biggest culprit is something going wrong in the middle of an update and usually I've found the only way to unbrick my phone is with a JAF box.

Now to the point if you want to upgrade you N95's firmware but NSU says there is not an available update for your particular version then a quick 5 min fix will get you that so needed update.

Step 1
Download b-phreaks Nemesis Sever Suit Here
Step 2
Install Nemesis (Just click next at USB Virtual Drive)
Step 3
Open Nemesis
Step 4
Click the little magnifying glass icon (Scan For New Device)
Step 5
Click on the Phone Info Icon
Step 6
Click Scan
Step 7
Click your phone on the list
Step 8
Enable Product Code
Step 9
Change Product code and press write
Step 10
Run NSU
Step 11
Throw a "I just updated my firmware party"

It is possible to debrand your phone using this method however people have reported it is still SIM locked even though it is debranded

!UPDATE!: I understand some people might have problems getting NSS to connect with their phones, this is because of the new connectivity driver which comes in the new PC Suits, to get it to work first uninstall your current Nokia Connectivity Driver (you can find it in your add/remove programs) and install this one
The link to check if their is an update available, works again

It should be cautioned that this action has been said, though not proven, to void the warranties of your device from Nokia and/or your service provider.

Again, this has not been proven- but without verification from either company, you should know that you are taking that risk. It is certainly of very minimal risk, if any at all, to change the Product ID on your Nokia N95- and US law prohibits a company from denying warranty work on a product that has been modified if such modifications have not resulted in the failure that necessitates repair to be covered by a warranty. This very well may be international law. It has yet to be proven to me or any other member of the staff at N95users.com that this will indeed void warranties by either Nokia or your service provider, but in the event that it does- you certainly cannot hold N95users.com responsible for preforming ANY modification found in these forums posted by any of its members.

That being said- my product IDs do not match- nor do I believe they ever will.

Cheers, JamesK. Thanks for the very thorough guide on this process.

So, did you change your product code and upgrade the firmware yet?

I'm also on Vodafone and keen to know if it works. Like you say, there seem to be differing opinions on here as to whether it works for Voda handsets or not....

Well after reading so much about this upgrade and how it makes the phone better.

I updated my firmware to version 13 after changing my product code to a euro code.

I am in New Zealand with a Vodafone Branded phone and i crossed my fingers and just did it.

It was so easy its not funny, just remember to leave the phone and computer alone till it says on computer screen the upgrade is done!!!

I did try to upgrade on old product code first just to make sure all the connections were o.k before i changed.

Vodafone removed alot of cool things but now i am happy with the new system and some extra stuff.

Seems to run alot faster.

As my phone was only 1 day old i did not have much on the phone so did reformat the memory card and also did a full reset before upgrade.

added contacts after from outlook

Well if your out there with branded Vodaphone my upgrade went really smooth took in total about 30-40 mins to fully complete .

But i guess at the end of the day if you do it, its at your own risk.

Cheers

Right then, I'll give it a go myself.

It's terrible that operators, like Vodafone, handicap these phones the way they do.
