N95 crashes with 8Gb card

Hi all,

Just bought a new 8Gb Sandisk card. It came with a little USB adaptor, so I loaded the card up with music using the adaptor plugged into my PC, then popped the card into the phone. The phone then crashed regularly, so I took the card out, formatted to FAT32, reloaded it and still the same problem.

I can reproduce the problem by connecting the phone to my PC via USB, then trying to create a folder - Instant reboot.

However, I've reformatted again, and this time copied a few files by connecting the phone via usb and copying using mass storage mode, and no reboots so far..

I don't think the card is faulty as it reads/writes fine via the usb adaptor.

So, should I always be copying stuff via the slow phone interface ??

Any ideas much appreciated,

Rob

I think we are all having differing experiences with memory cards. I also have an N95-1 with 8GB Sandisk Micro SDHC. When I first got the phone and card, I tried to format the card in the phone, but it failed, so I formatted in my Vista Laptop using the USB adapter that came with the card.

Using f/w v11 and v12, I did get semi-regular crashes, but I put that down to the poor memory management of those versions of f/w.

When I upgraded to f/w v20, I also formatted the card in the Vista Laptop again, and have only had about 2 crashes in a month.

I seldom transfer files via USB cable to the phone. Small files are sent via Bluetooth to the phone, and larger files (like when I was transferring the music and videos back on after formatting the card), were put back on with the card in the USB adapter, and into a spare USB port on the laptop.

Just spent most of the evening investigating this issue. I'm on v11.0.026.

I've done multiple formats/scan disks on the card.

As far as I can tell the card works fine in the phone until it has more than 4Gb on it. After that it crashes repeatedly...

Time to debrand ??

Yes I had this problem before de branding and updating too. Officially Nokia say the N95-1 is only upgradeable via card to 2gig. This is patently untrue. I cannot encourage people into de branding and updating enough. If I can bite the bullet and do it anyone can. It gives your phone a new lease of life. I shall do it after owning my next upgrade on getting home with it. A device is (criminally in my opinion) crippled by [u]all[u/] U.K operators in my experience.

Thanks everyone!

I now have shiny new v20 firmware, and 8Gb worth of music..

One question - do I need to set my product code back to the original operator's code now (until I upgrade the firmware again). Just thinking about possible warranty issues..

Only for warranty issuses, nothing else, and then only to be on the safe side. Enjoy your phone, its like getting a new one.

I put mine back to the operator's product code, and had a repair completed under warranty with no questions asked, so I would put the product code back. It only takes a few seconds, and if it helps in the future, it is worth doing.
