Now I'm lost, as the N95 already supports HSDPA - well it does in the UK!

The 3G frequency is different in the US, currently the N95 does not support that US 3G frequency, therefore, the best speeds that can be obtained in the US on the N95, is EDGE.
This 'new' US N95 has support for the US 3G frequency.

That was what I thought it meant.
So yours will support 850 & 1900 rather than the 900 & 1800 of the rest of the world.
But now I'm lost as 3G operates on 2100 too. Even in the US. Or do very few carriers support 2100 outside city centres?
As the N95 is quadband and supports ALL frequencies, I think it's actually network enablement which is bringing the N95 to it's prime of users, rather than a 'US N95'
List of HSDPA networks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So unless you have 3G, AND your network has upgraded their GPRS/EDGE systems to HSPDA, then you'll not get it.

Currently, there aren't any US carriers operating 3G in the 2100mhz band. The Wikipedia entry included in the last post mentioned that T-Mobile USA has control over 1700 and 2100mhz here in the US so hopefully they will launch their 3G network in 2100mhz so we can get in on some 3G action here in the US with our N95's.

I bet we see something from the 700mhz before we see Tmobile on the 2100 in the States...
