Fido and 3G displayed on the screen

I am on the Fido network in Toronto and I have noticed that the 3G icon is displayed on the screen (ever since i got the phone over the weekend. Am I being charged something while the 3G is displayed on the screen?

I changed it so that it just operates on the GSM network for the time being. After I changed it, I noticed that my signal strengh goes down. I have searched for information regarding this an no luck.

Please let me know.

Thanks

Nope. Only if the 3G bit has bold arrows underneath will you be incurring data charges.

3G on its own: Nothing

3G with dotty arrows underneath: connecting to 3G

3G with bold arrows underneath: Connected to 3G

I'm sure that's 3G and data available. It flashes while connecting.

Yes you're right. When the arrows r dotty, it means theres a network available. When the dotty arrows flash, its connectin.

Theres no differentiation between GSM and 3G minutes price wise. But as you noticed you do get better reception, clarity, and volume with 3G, the only downside is shorter battery life. Since you have a 3G phone though, I'd say be carefull about your data usage, you can easily rack up a huge bill. And if your not subscribed to a data plan deleting the access points might be a good idea.

No kidding, I tried out my 3G on Rogers in Toronto just to see that it was functioning....

238 kb before I could kill the browser (less than 2 sec)....

$11.90 on my phone bill, so be bloody careful with Canadian data!

I'm on Fido with my N95-3 purchased from TigerDirect.Ca.

I have a normal type voice plan and their $30/6GB data plan. The only problem is that you're required to have a 3-year term for the 6GB data plan.

It appears that Fido's $30 for 6GB is a limited time offer good until the end of August. If you get it after the end of August it will apparently go back up to $100.

The Fido $30/6GB data plan is quite fast on 3G. I put JoikuSpot on my N95 to make it into a WiFi hotspot and I can successfully tether my Nokia N800 and my laptop to my N95's wifi hotspot but am unable to get it tethered to my HP iPAQ 210. Trouble is that it's the HP iPAQ 210 that I most want to tether to the N95 WiFi hoptspot as the two devices I ALWAYS have with me are my N95 and my iPAQ 210. I just can't work out how to tether my iPAQ 210 to my N95 with Bluetooth.

$30 extra a month is definitely an extra expense, even if it's for 6GB; but walking around with your own personal WiFi HotSpot in your pocket is really great!
