Yeah, that was the point I was trying to make in my post.
In the UK, people are brainwashed to think that phones are FREE. We only pay for the line rental. Even though there's no line, as such. Should be Number rental if anything.
It's something that really bugs me when I hear people in the say. "Yeah, it was £30 a month, for 18 months and I got a Free Phone" It's brilliant marketing, people generally don't see that 18x£30 is over £500, way more than the phone costs.
Like, a chap I spoke to in the pub said he got the N95 8gb for "FREE", but when I got into the detail, it's a 24 month contract at £45 a month! That's over a Grand! So there's an element in there to pay for the calls and texts, but that's still a bit steep, IMO.
The main reason it bugs me, is that I get grief at work when I dish out the new (cheap) phones because some staff think I can just demand 40 FREE iPhones or RAZR thingies with no financial implication on our contract cost.
However. Our (UK) system Is a good way to pay for the phone over time, instead of one hit, but the way I see it, you should look for a contract where you pay as close to the phone cost as possible over the length of the contract.
eg: Ross, your deal is mint!

Careful with that fella. That's £1 for just popping on, by accident. Potentially up to £30 a month.
Consider the £7.50 200mb bolt on instead. ;)

Pretty sure, A-GPS will also pop online when you use Maps. Another one to check.
