Angry New as of July 9th! Rogers data plan $30 for 6 GB

.
At 11 am today (Wednesday, July 9th) on CBC-Newsworld I heard that Rogers Canada is now offering a data plan of $30 a month for 6 GB. They said it would be not just for new iPhone folks but also for any Rogers client who owned a 3G phone.

After an hour of being shuffled from person to person I was eventually told by Rogers that CBC Newsworld was wrong! This plan is not for any Rogers clients, only for those already on a plan.

As I use my Nokia N95-3 on Pay-as-You-Go they will NOT let me get the $30/6GB data plan!

Now got to decide if I can afford to switch from Pay-as-You-Go to a monthly voice plan just so I can qualify for the $30/6GB data plan.

well it is a "plan" not credit on pay as you go. Just a question. Does anyone know if the n95-2 can be used as a 3g phone in canada? or does it have to be the n95-4?

There's a catch

I just signed up for this plan today. Its $30\month for 6GB on a 3 year contract for the data only. Not related to your phone plan. However it's a max $100 cancellation penalty. I was on the flex plan at $50\month for 500MB so even if I was to cancel after 5 months I would be no worse off. If you don't want a contract you would have to get the $30\month for 300MB.

I'm weighing my options on getting this plan myself. On one hand, it seems like Rogers is breaking all of its own rules and charging a reasonable price for data, but on the other, they're pulling the same old crap to try to get you locked in for three years (although a max $100 ecf isn't that bad either).

I just find that Rogers is so much easier to deal with when you tell them that you'd like to cancel your service rather than deal with their BS. The impossible always becomes possible when you're on the line with retentions.

Prices on mobile data should come down before that contract is up, but for today nothing beats it since 300 megs isn't worth $30.

Nope, the N95-2 has the wrong frequencies for North America, but if you're willing to suffer EDGE, the 6 GB plan is also available for 2G data as well.

So with the $30 for 6GB data plan, you're no longer subject to the $0.15/KB data charges for "unapproved applications" Rogers warns about on the N95 page, correct?

Provided you haven't already used 6GB in that month, of course.

Exactly Senj, it's a real data plan where you can use if for anything including tethering.

Okay, I deal with (and ***** at on a constant basis) with Rogers:

1) If you don't feel like shelling out a ridicoulous sum of money for a Roger's N95..you need to buy a unlocked N95-4. This is a 8GB, US/Canada 3G version.

2) To Senj, sorry, but no dice. I still think you can't use unapproved applications (read: anything at all lol) without getting hammered with that charge. Why? Well, I got nailed with 15c/kb when I latched onto Rogers network in 'maps' to find my location. Instead of going under my data, it gave me a nice $12 charge. Bummer. But they may have changed that, I don't really know, I stay away from Rogers internet on my N95 now.

3) 6GB for 30 is a good deal on the surface. But on 3G and especially on a N95; thats absolutely nothing. Better off waiting for unlimited data to come or something. Since I can burn through 6GB in a week. Easily.

To clarify, Rogers is not going to limit your use of their new data plans. The only plan where you have to worry about 3rd party apps is their $7 unlimited browsing.

As for unlimited data, Rogers has already stated that they will not be offering that. First off, Rogers would be cannibalizing their cable internet service ($40 for 60GB, $60 for 95GB). Secondly, Canada is too tech savvy a market to roll that out in, their network would be immediately overwhelmed as everyone in the country started streaming video on their phones 24/7.
