charging me for using my own wireless home network
i received my first monthly bill from 3 mobile today and there was a surcharge of £2 odd. I rang up customer services to find out what the surcharge was for. After 12minutes of listening to loads of crap songs i finally got through to india. I explained my situation and he said the surcharge was for internet usage. I can't understand it though i only connect to the internet using the wireless access point in my house. It's nothing to do with 3. I explained this to the customer servies bloke but he's retarded. I said "i've connected my nokia n95 to my wireless home network so i can access the internet. Only i've received a surcharge and the only thing i can think it is for is using the internet, as i definitly havn't gone over my minutes. I can't understand why you've charged my though as i'm not using the 3 network to connect to the internet at all, infact my broadband is with orange."
His reply- "sorry this is a 3 mobile customer services helpline, we can't help you as you are with orange"
After a very long discussion he just said "yeah the surcharge is for using the internet"
I didn't think you were charged for using the internet though if you used your own home network.

Thats wrong, you should not be charged at all for connecting to the net via WLAN. I have a DNA PAYG sim in one of my N95's, and connect to the net with my home WLAN, and no credit gets used at all.!

I thought that aswell, but the customer services bloke was completly brain dead and didn't have a clue what i was on about.
The only thing i can think is that when i was setting it up i accidently logged on to the internet through the 3 service, noyl for a few seconds though (wap or something like that i think) and he did say they charge £2 odd per MB, so i wonder if they've charged me for the full MB

I remebered read some warning about using net with WLAN. N95 might change from WLAN to 3G or EDGE when using net, happened me once. Lucky me that I noticed that right away and disconnected before any information was received.
Just tested this: Tools -> WLAN wizard-> Start WEB browsing-> TeleFinland, as my network provider, N95 start connect to net using EDGE not WLAN, but if I start use net with google, it connect through my home WLAN. Perhaps something to do with access points. So that might be the reason that you get surcharge using internet, be sure that you are connected through your WLAN. Hope this make any sence and my poor english...

It is pretty much impossible for your Network provider to charge you for using a private wifi network, even if they wanted to.
I'd put it down to accidental usage.
I agree with three's customer services though, useless *****. I'm now with o2, and fortunately, haven't had to call them yet.

try this: Menu->Applications->Log->[click right]
for every internet connection you recently made there should be a log entry with an upward blue arrow and with "WLAN" or "Pack." written next to it. to check if you have only been using WLAN you should see if they all say "WLAN" and none says "Pack."
i'm almost sure some connections must be "Pack." because a provider can't charge you for using WLAN. maybe you used Maps and it downloaded some content without you noticing

Seriously have a look to make sure they didn't sign you up for any 3 value packs when you signed up...
They had a month's worth of free access when I signed up, I said I didn't want it but they ended up signing me up for it anyway, They'd charged me a couple of months worth until I realised..
I could unsubscribe over My3 and was only $4 worth so wasn't worth wasting my time trying to call up and get my money back though..

thanks for all the help guys.
Georgije i have tried what you said but i couldn't find 'log' in the applications menu.
I Went on menu-->log-->packet data
Now if i'm right WLAN dosn't use packet data does it?
Well in packet data i had
All sent data- 155.66kb
All received data- 1.45mb
So i bet it was the accidental connection i explained earlier that has caused the charge

Correct, WLAN data is not included in the packet data count, so that is where the charge has come from.
