Updating a Rogers Branded N95 to the latest firmware

Hello,

I called Rogers and was transferred 5 times. The call took about 90 minutes. Ultimately they told me I have do deal with Nokia to update the phone.

There was not mention of product codes or Rogers branding. Just that removing the branding voided the warranty.

They said anything from the Rogers site was supported. V. 2.x was not listed.

A rep at a kiosk said anything downloaded from the Nokia site is fine.

Thoughts?

Calling and rogers and nokia will do nothing as they don't acknowledge the existence of the newer firmwares hence not being "available for updates".

If you want to get the lastest firmware, you're going to have to debrand. Otherwise, you're hooped.

Firmware Update and Branded phones....?

Nokia and Rogers won't confirm the existence of the latest firmware? But I thought it was from Nokia?

From experience is there a big advantage to using 2.x?

Thanks,

Tmuldoon

There is no new firmware for Rogers, so logically neither Rogers nor Nokia can confirm its existence - since it does not exist.

There is a new firmware for non-branded handsets, so if you want it, you'll have to debrand with all the attached risks. There are quite a few threads on the subject if you decide to proceed, so please search. "successful upgrade and debranding of Rogers N95-4" comes to mind - or maybe "successful debranding and upgrade of N95-4 on rogers" - something along these lines.

I have no experience at all with N95-4, so cannot judge whether V.20 is much better than V.11 and in what way. I can only tell you that ASR (Automatic Screen Rotation) is not available for the N95-4 even on V.20, unlike the N95-2. I have no idea why, but that's the way it is.

Maybe because N95-4 doesn't have the accelerometer?

Rogers is the worst operator in north America and I can say for sure its better not to try to change the phone's firmware at all if you dont want problems with your warranty since I am guessing you signed a 3 year contract...anyways I have some questions about that phone
1.Can you run N-gage games?
2.Can you install 3rd party applications?

I have a Nokia N95-4 8GB, product code 0564753 .

This page says:

Nokia N95 8GB support
Nokia - Software - Nokia N95 8GB support

Nokia N95 8GB Software version 15.0.015 released.
This software version includes Flash Lite 3 support which enables users to
watch Flash video Web sites such as YouTube and improved power
consumption allow you to do more for longer. Other improvements include
WLAN and browser stability, email viewing and Nokia Maps startup.

The "Check Product Codes Here" page : Nokia Europe - Device software update - Support says:

Latest available software for Nokia N95 8GB, product code 0564753
Version: 11.2.011

Latest available software for Nokia N95 8GB, product code 0549487
Version: 20.0.016

Latest available software for Nokia N95 8GB, product code 0550359
Version: 20.0.016

Latest available software for Nokia N95 8GB, product code 0550378
Version: 20.0.016

I read this thread, used NSS, even tried code 0561948 (and rebooted phone) but the Updater still
says that I have the newest version (11.2.011) for my phone. Any ideas anyone.

You have two issues here:

1. You have a N95-4 and you seem to by trying to update it by using N95-2 product codes, which will never work for reasons that hopefully are immediately obvious.

2. The "Check Product Codes Here" page : Nokia Europe - Device software update - Support says that for product code 0561948 the latest available firmware version is 20.2.005 - which is the correct latest available version for N95-4.

There is no reason for NSU not allowing to upgrade to 20.2.005 unless you are not changing successfully your current product code.

This means you are doing something wrong with NSS. Until you explain in more detail and step-by-step what is the meaning of "I used NSS" I don't think anyone will be in a position to help you.
