Wireless connection question
Hello
I just got my '95 and phoned up Vodafone (my phone's on their network) today to ask a few questions.
I've read on these forums that connecting your N95 to the internet via a wireless connection is free.
I asked Vodafone about this and they said it's not free because it involves using the N95 as a modem. Are they talking rubbish, or am I missing something here?
Is there some configuration I need to alter in the phone to ensure that it is free when using a WiFi connection?
Please be patient with me, I'm such a noob to all this!

I think they must have misunderstood you.
Your N95 has WiFi built in so when you're in range of an access point, such as a public host-spot, or your home wireless connection, you can connect your N95 to the internet for free. (As long as the public hotspot is free of course).
Your N95 can also connect to the internet over your cellular network (GPRS, 3G, HSDPA) but that will cost you money, unless you have an unlimited data plan as part of your mobile contract.
On the main screen of your phone (active standby, or the 'desktop') you have a wifi network scanner. Just highlight it and press the joystick button to scan for wireless networks in your vicinity. Choose one that doesnt have the 'lock' symbol and you're away! (In most cases).
Does that clear things up a little? :)

No point talking to the numpties at Vodafone, if it isn't on their script they won't have a clue.
As long as you are connecting via Wifi it is free as far as your phone contract goes. It might cost you on your internet bill or if you are using someone else's internet connection it might cost you a spell in jail. But it won't show on your Vodafone bill.

Thanks for that.
I thought I was going a bit nuts when they told me I had to pay.
I've used the WLAN scanning feature a couple of times and found some connections, but I think it's one of the neighbours'. Probably best not to use that do you think?
Nevertheless, I'm loving this fine phone!!

It's illegal, as it is in many US states, to use a wireless network without permission.

In the UK having an unprotected network means the network owner is fully liable for all nasty content people download.
I know someone who got a letter regarding illegal MP3 uploading/hosting, and no way to prove it wasnt them. They got a warning, and a rude awakening which lead them to lock down their wifi!

Not crazy talk at all. Not quite a jail spell, but £500 fine and a 12 month conditional discharge.

It falls down to needing permission from the owner. Them leaving it unlocked does not constitute permission for you to use it.
Free hotspots in bars and hotels etc will be advertised as such, and thus giving you permission. ;)
