I just had a response from o2 about the v12 firmware - not particularly good news I'm afraid (other than they know there *IS* a v12 firmware):

"We haven't released the latest version (V12) for the Nokia N95 firmware. This is because before we launch any latest version, we need to check the compatibility with our network. I'm unable to tell you when we'll release the latest version (V12) for the Nokia N95 on our network. When we'll release it, it'll be updated on our website. Yes, debranding your phone will void the warranty of your phone. You'll be able to debrand your phone when you complete your contract term. If you want to debrand your phone before your contract term completion you'll need to pay relevant charges. These charges will be calculated by taking the remaining number of months (of your contract) multiplied by your monthly service charge (line rental). Also you'll be charged £15.00 to get the unlatching code for your phone."

LOL at O2.

How dare they charge for you debranding? The handset is completely different/separate from the contract. Trying to pull a fast one.

However the HAVE confirmed what I have long advised debranders. It WILL void your warranty with both the providing network AND Nokia. This seems to be increasingly true in the UK.

I think whoever at o2 told you this has got debranding (changing the product code to allow firmware update) mixed up with unlocking (allowing the phone to be used on any network)

There is no way that debranding is chargeable. The only charge involved is the warranty situation when you turn your phone into a brick!

How would they even know if you de-branded your phone anyway, there's no way they could?

Unless you asked them to fix/replace it, then they shouldnt be able to.

As has been said, seems more likely they mean unlocking.

That does sound to be what the o2 fella was getting at.

Actually, all O2 phones come "unlocked". One of the main reasons I like O2. They also don't modify the OS, except for an O2 screensaver.

But I agree. There's no way they could know if you've de-branded it or charge you for it. Unless they are charging for some sort of bricking insurance?

That said, v12 went on to my O2 N95 with no issues. It actually fixed many issues I was experiencing and was an extremely easy process. You'll find the step by step guide on this forum somewhere.

I would be interested to find out how many people have actually managed to brick their N95 by de-branding it. I gathere there's also some legal obligation with the warrenty, even if it's been de-branded... pseudofinn?

This would be nice to know about, because I'm phoning Carphone Warehouse tomorrow to find out the "damage" from bricking my phone whilst updating to v12 after debranding.

I'm not looking forward to the call.

I guess it does sound like they were talking about unlocking, but aren't pretty much all O2 handsets unlocked already? Definetely some confusion - I'm still not entirely sure that debranding to update to V12 will invalidate my warranty. I guess I'll hold out for an O2 v12 for now...
