T-mobile internet outside of coverage area?

I have full T-Mobile internet plan. When i'm in virginia, we have tmobile everywhere and thus, my internet has always worked. But i'm in chapel hill, north carolina, today and I've got nothing. It says "Packet Data not available." It also has my connection on the left side listed as 3G instead of Edge. Is there anyway i can switch over to edge and use internet? I had a sidekick a couple years ago down here and it worked, so i'm thinking there has to be a way to do it now. I used to have the same problem with my Tytn.

Any suggestions?

I picked up the signal today when I started roaming on suncom instead of AT&T. So I'm guessing its going to be a matter of locking onto suncom and not leaving. Any tips?

have you checked to see if tmobile has cover where you are? it sounds to me they do not so you will be roaming while you are there. which will cost you to roam offcourse :(
