Ring them up and tell them (assuming this payment is wrong due to their cockup) that the payment is currently in dispute, and you need your mobile phone.

Needless to say, dont pay it as it will make things much much harder to reclaim money from them.

Yes, getting back on track with the post.

A good complaint letter is essential. Ensure it's typed/printed rather than handwritten, ensure that sufficient detail is encluded for them to contact you and investigate the complaint, and try to keep emotion out of it. You almost want a legal document, dry and unemotional. As someone who deals with complaints for a bank, there's nothing worse than receiving a handwritten scroll that reads like a stalking letter. It's either impossible to investigate, put in the too hard basket, or thrown away. Sample complaint letters:
