You don't need to brute force it since you continually broadcast it, it's just a matter of knowing where to look and how to decypher it. Takes a few minutes if you get lucky.

I wonder how many of the unsecured actually have mac address authentication rather than WEP?

chances are if theyre not smart or technial enough to enforce WEP they prob wont have turned on the mac filtering. but mac filtering is not secure in the slightest, maybe we should have a wireless security thread

I am not going to teach anyone how to crack a WEP encryption, but if some of you would like to better understand the wireles security standards, what they are and how they function... I would be glad to answer any of those questions. This is what I do for a living.

Just start a Wireless Security Thread.

Cracking WEP encryption is not difficult, however I do believe the hardest part would be capturing the correct information on a N95. This is because your wireless adapter has to be able to do a certain function, I forget what it is called. And at the moment I can only find a few computer compatible cards which will do this and you are stuck with the one included in the phone.

Also it requires a large amount of processing power. There are many programs on the internet which will do a lot of this for you, however the majority run on linux.

If you really want to crack a WEP key use a computer, with linux or a linux distro like BackTrack 2. With AirSnort and other programs and drivers. And try to find a wardriving website.

From what I know on programs like Airsnort etc, if your talking about cracking someone as an individual's, WEP key, it is nigh on impossible, as it will take years for you to gather enough info to complete. Also if you are talking a large corporate building with say a few hundred networked users, using the network 24/7, then yes Airsnort will no doubt capture the req. info. however this still will take a few days!

heh im a security consultant myself, **** interesting line of work.

On a side note with linux evolving to mobile devices (The Linux Mobile Phones Showcase ) i dont think it will be too long before this sort of thing is possible. It is already possible to sniff wireless traffic already with PDA's its just a question of hardware and drivers. If someone were to develop a piece of hardware that was handheld and would allow wireless auditing etc they could make a packet from the pen testing industry.
