What state you live in?
Just go park by a McDonalds, a publice library or a state school.
Best hotspots in my area and only ever come across 1 that was secure.

Yes... now-a-days the content on the internet enables people to do just about anything.
The information can be conflicting... What is out there to help you better understand how things work? And what teaches one how to cause mischief?

I think its called Promiscuous mode. I think that means that the network card can read packets that are not neccesarily for its MAC address.

I might, the two terms are similar but do mean different things:

If I come across unsecured networks when I am at home or working I tend to advise people on how to get atleast basic security. I am amazed at how many people tell me to mind my own business, go figure.
As for having a sniff around for passwords, that is not hard at all with my laptop.
On a sidenote, I often scan for networks when I am out, pure curiosity, and most of my local shops and supermarkets use wireless now, and around 50% of those are unsecured to start with.
Whilest I do not condone using someone elses bandwidth, if they lack the knowledge and are unwilling to learn then they get what they deserve. Some people have been extremely rude to me when I have offered, for free, to assist them.

Well, if they get done for downloading kiddy porn or grabbed by the RIAA/BPI you can at least sit back and laugh, safe in the knowlage that at least you tried to help them.

Bart, the best payback I ever saw was someone lives 2 doors down from me, he actually telephoned the police to make a complaint about me. I only mentioned it when I saw him one day and he got extremely uptight about it all, swearing at me for some reason.
2 weeks later he asked me to fix it for him, 'it is slow' were his actual words. I had a look and it was a total mess, I informed him a format was probably the only realistic way to go. He blew me out and took it to a local shop, 3 weeks and over 20o quid later he got it back, supposedly fixed but actually still loaded up with crap. In the end I charged him 50 quid to quickly format it and reinstall windows XP. I also advised him to get a RAM upgrade as he was seriously limited and could not run much in the way of security stuff, but he declined my offer to sell him some old RAM I had.
Finally, about 2 weeks later he got a letter from his ISP, after they cut him off, stating his connection was being used in a way that contravened his T&C's, someone had been using his wireless connection without his knowledge, they also had access to his system and had swiped all kinds of personal info. I refused to help him LOL
Last thing I heard he paid someone else local to beef up his system, they told him they would keep his case, keyboard and monitor etc, just replace mobo and the other guts. He came round to complain about slow performance and I had a quick look, it was the same computer, inside and out, and he had paid the fella that did it £600. LMAO
You really cannot help some people.
