ugrading firmware

I'm new to trying a firmware upgrade so forgive any stupid questions.

I've installed PC suite and backed up my phone using the software.

Last week I downloaded the software upgrader from the Nokia Europe site. I'm on V15 at the minute and it tells me I can go to V20.

I installed this on my laptop and connected the phone up thinking that this was the software upgrade.

When I start up the application it connects to the phone and then to the net and starts to download a 111MB file.

Is this large file the new software update? When it downloads this, what do I have to do next?

I only ask as at home I'm on a temporary dial up connection and if its 111MB I need to go somewhere wireless to get sorted.

Is there a step by step tutorial to upgrading firmware on here?

Cheers.

N95 FAQ -=- A MUST READ For New Users

Basically, allow NSU to download the firmware, and do nothing, let NSU do the rest. It will tell you when its completed.

Thanks for that.

Looks like I need to go wireless at some point and let it do its 111MB thing.

Out of interest, can I do this through the N95 itself. I've got an unlimited web browsing add on wiht my tariff but I'm not sure if this counts if you use the N95 itself to connect the PC to the internet.

No, you can't do it this way with the N95. Newer models have the option of OTA (over-the-air) updates, but not the N95.

thanks

Thanks for that.

Just got a bit confused as most posts regarding upgrading say to download the nokia software, run it, connect it to the phone and leave it to do its thing.

No mention of being connected to the net and waiting for a download. I guess most people are on broadband though and as such don't really disconnect from the internet any more.

Just want to make sure I've got everything I need as I've been wanting to do this for a week or so but keep running into problems.

Im an nseries noob aswell and i updated my firmware to 20...... something the other day.

Dont trust the nokia backup to backup your stuff as i lost all my contacts! lucky i had them all saved on my old phones memory!

All you do is download the update software and when you have made sure you have backed up everything connect the phone and follow the on screen instructions, it was 114.9mb for me and it only took about 15-20mins to do the whole process

You obviously did something wrong as i've not heard of back ups failing at all.

nah, sometimes the backups do fail. i've experienced them myself, though not that common. the important thing to take note is the size of the backups. if they're small, most likely something is wrong. repeat the backup again till you get a reasonable file size. and perform more than one way of backing up (ie. not only using pc suite; phone backup to memory etc)

Not experienced one myself, or read about any.
