Unhappy RealPlayer and h.264/AVC Playback with mencoder+x264 encoded videoclips

Hi everybody,
First of all, great to see the n95 already has a comunity :)
i just got my N95 and I'm really satisfied with everything, except one little problem.

The problem is:
I am converting my videos on a linux box with mencoder into mpeg4 h.264/AVC.
I am using the x264 codec (almost latest svn).

My problem is: the n95 (and quicktime) wont play the videos. Quicktime tells me the file isnt a video, but videolan player plays fine.

So my question is:
Did anyone experience a problem like i have, and if, do you have a solution? :)

Maybe mencoder just breaks up the container or something... anyway here are some details:

Debian 4 on c2d 4400
mencoder dev-SVN-r23544-4.1.2
x264 0.55.656

Ahh btw: I tried SUPER but maybe i am just doing wrong. it doesnt work either.

Thank you for reading this thread,
Reemo

Super on Linux or Windows? (I don't even know if there is a Linux variety). Many people use Super here and don't have a problem with it.. H.264 is fully supported by the N95, as you know. I'm inclined to think your initial reaction may be right... Maybe a bug in the implementation, or maybe it was tested on Linux, and all the Windows encoders have a bug whereas the Linux encoder actually does it perfectly, but to it's own detriment?

Who knows. Most people use their N95 with Windows around here. After all, the supporting applications (PC Suite, Maploader, etc) are written for windows. Grab a copy of parallels, BootCamp (if you got the new Intel CPU) or even Wine, and run the Windows varieties... Sorry that doesn't solve the problem but you're using beta software, and by it's very nature, it's going to have problems that only the developers can help you with.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I wish you luck.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to the forums!

First of all, thank you for your reply.

I just tried again with super, and it works now.

But maybe you know, as you read about super, it makes use of ffmpeg, x264, (mencoder).... the same software i use ;)

SUPER is just the gui at all..
If SUPER would produce some output i maybe could reproduce this on my linux box...

I'll keep working on this issue, maybe other N95 users would like to know how to convert files under linux.

Of course i use windows as desktop, but i dont want to wait >5h till my windows workstation has encoded a dvd to mpeg4 (h264 with x264), so a linux server really helps me out ;)

i have no idea about how the things work in linux but if you would try to encode x264 with mainline not baseline.just an idea.

h264 is broken in mencoder for Linux,

ffmpeg should work but there might be a problem with the audio codec.

H264 is not broken with mencoder.

I'm fairly certain the problem you are having is with the 'tag' or header mencoder produces. Mencoder uses some fairly standard header which unfortunatly not all players support properly. I had this problem a while back it deals with "ffourcc". So, to fix this problem you re-encoder your video but first do:

1) Make a file ~/.mplayer/mencoder.conf and add "ffourcc=DX50"

or

2) Add a command line option -ffourcc=dx50

I recommend you google this issue "mencoder ffourcc" (you should get a wiki article). Its a good read.
