I use it on both Windows XP and Vista, and its never locked up on me once!
How are you connecting, via cable or bluetooth? Is this the same pc that you upgraded to Vista that you ran XP on? Don't have any other programs crashing or anything?
But to answer your question it depends what functionality you are requiring from your alternative. If you are looking for a means of simply transferring data to your phone, then you could always pull the storage card out of your phone and plug it directly into your PC via a converter, or if you have infrared, you can infrared directly from your phone to windows.
Synchronising your contacts might be more difficult, but there is software out there (at a price) that I believe could achieve this for you. You have to remember that PC Suite is (a great!) combination of several mini-programs so to speak, so if you wish to try and replace it, it will be with several different pieces of software.
You can install most applications by directly copying .sis files to your phone and running them from there as opposed to the nokia application installer.
You can find an alternate movie converter, such as WinAVI Mp4 converter.
You will have to manually back up all your data as opposed to using nokia software backup, you can again pay money for a program to backup your contacts, etc.
Anyway, I hope you get the idea. If I were you, even thought you must be a little frustrated, I'd try and invest the time into finding out why Pc Suite is causing you problems - as personally I think it's really good software!

I'm Connecting using Cable Using Vista Ultimate
Running an AMD64+ 2.6Ghz with 1.5GB RAM.
IT crashes when i try to edit contacts on the computer or try to send messages.
Besides that it works Fine.
I have the same issue with my laptop too. Its running "Windows XP Sp2"
(Intel Duo Core 1.8Ghz 1.5Gb ram) I'm using the built on BLuetooth connection for this though
When i'm home i jus find it easier to reply 2 Sms's on my computer its alot easier.
& also i archive them. Well that what i did with my old Sony Ericcson phone.
I work for THREE MOBILE(Hutchison Corp) as a sales rep. Having dealt with most phones. I usally find that software bundled with phones are very Buggy & sensitive
SOny Ericsson & Nokia software are one of the better ones.
The rest is just shocking. (eg; Motorolla, LG, Samsung etc;)

I've tried the send SMS and update contacts and both Vista and XP and I have to say they are both working flawlessly on PC Suite 6.83.14.1
What version are you running?

PC Suite works ok for me on my XP SP2 machines. Ensure you are using the latest PCSuite version. Perhaps its time to reinstall XP, something else could be causing the crash, i.e. memory errors, corrupted system files, norton iamavirus, etc..

HAha, yea... Norton really disappointed me with it's 2007 product line up. I have Mcafee total protection now. Works like a charm!
